I visited the DVC store front on Main Street while my husband and boys were at a water park. I took the tour the same afternoon and fairly sure it was right for our family.
The problem was that we were leaving the following morning. The only time to have my husband see the models and talk to the guide was before two hours before we left for our cruise. Poor timing I know...
He went, somewhat unwillingly and listened. He agreed it did look good but was not in the financial picture for us at that time.
I was disappointed but had him promise that when the money was there we would buy DVC.
We came home and he found the DIS boards for me and I found out about resales. A year later the financial picture did change and we bought a resale.
To recap how not to do it...
1. Be uninformed
2. Be rushed
3. Be pushy
May you be wiser than I was.
