What are your thoughts?

My daughter and I are taking a quick trip to Disney at the end of May. I have a standard royal room at POR but have read lots of negative stuff regarding full buses, long waits. Another consideration is AKL. If I got a standard room would I be put at the far end of the resort? Pros and cons of each resort would be helpful!

If you have a Royal Room at Port Orleans you will be right near the lobby and food court.

Port Orleans is a bigger resort but I think bus times, etc will depend on when you are traveling.

We just returned from POR yesterday! It was pretty busy since we are in Spring Break season. However, we only waited for more than 10 minutes on a bus ONE time and that was at Boardwalk, not POR or a park! We had taken the boat from Epcot to BW so we could get to DTD for our dinner ADR. We waited about 15-20 minutes there.

At POR, we never waited more than 5 minutes for a bus. We always used the main depot though. At busy times in the mornings, our bus would be full by the time it got to the East Depot and we didn't stop so my guess is that those people might have waited longer for a bus. We had the same luck in the parks with buses. I think we waited almost 10 minutes at Magic Kingdom for a bus back to POR, but almost every other time, a POR bus was pulling up to the stop as we got there! We talked all week about our "good bus luck!"

If you do choose AKL you can get a pool view room for an extra $11-12 a night. My family and I stayed in a pool view room in Oct. and we loved it. We had a room on the same floor as the lobby (3rd floor,I think?) and the view was really nice from the balcony. I want to go back to AKL at some point. It's a really nice resort.

AKL is amazing. I would definitely do AKL over POR

As PP mentioned, we had a pool view room as well. We were in room 3014 on the Giraffe Trail. It was a perfect location. We were on the same floor and close to the lobby, we were near the bus stop (just walk the opposite way from the lobby and either take the elevator or stairs down to a side door that comes out by the busses), and we were close to the pool.
