My family and I love Thanksgiving. It's only 2 weeks away. I'm busy setting some plans into action for ours. So it has me wondering what everybody else does for Thanksgiving?

Do you traditionally have a big dinner?

Do you serve appretizers?

Do you serve turkey, ham or roast beef?

What sides do you eusually have?

What's for dessert?

Do you do all the cooking, most of it or none of it?

Do you bake your pies from scatch, buy them or have others bring them?

How many guests do you usually have?

How do you arrnage the dinner, sit down or buffet style?

Do you use your good chine, other dinnerware or paper products?

What do you do if you have a small house, where do you put everyone?

Do you plan activites for the children present?

Thanks to anyone who answers. Hope you have a wonderful time planning your festivities. :cool1:

We go to my mother and father in laws house for thanksgiving every year and every year we are told to just bring our appetites. They LOVE to cook and bake and they do it all for 25 people. We do usually take a dessert. Plus, they plan family games that everyone enjoys. So much fun and they do the same thing for the family christmas party two weeks before christmas.

We usually have the in laws come down for Thanksgiving. But this year they are meeting us in disney that weekend. So we will be having dinner at Cracker Barrel. They do a great Thanksgiving dinner. $8.99 includes your drink and pie. Yum, can't wait.

My Kids and Grandkids will be at our house Thanksgiving day. We usually have a turkey with all the trimmings...YUM. Of course, football all day. Got get to bed early, because DD works on Friday. Then Saturday we will be in WDW.:yay: 5 days and 4 nights what a way to top off Thanksgiving.:wizard:

This year we'll be having ten people for a potluck Thanksgiving served family style at the regular dinner table with the good china and so on. The years we have a large number, some people bring their china and linens while others bring extra chairs, as well as their food contributions, and we set up one big community table with saw horses and plywood, and we set up outside or in the garage depending on the weather. If there were a large number of people, we'd rent tables and chairs, it's really not that expensive.

Our menu is unvarying: turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry relish, cornbread stuffing, brussel sprouts, baked squash with apple sauce, biscuits, rolls, cider, cranberry juice, shrub (a colonial punch with sherbert), mincemeat pie, apple pie, pumpkin pie, vanilla ice cream, and whipped cream (plus pepto-bismol, more likely than not ;)). No appetizers, we've all been too busy cooking most years to get breakfast, but we slice some apples and cheddar for those that can't make it to 2pm without fainting or throwing a tantrum.

We don't plan activities per se, and we don't follow football, so usually it's just conversation, kids playing, and music for entertainment. If the crowd is willing, there might be dancing. The kids have some coloring pages and homemade costumes. This year there's a new Hallmark Thanksgiving movie based on a novella by the author of "Little Women" that looks promising, so we might have that to watch for the traditional late night turkey sandwiches.

We're all nuts about Thanksgiving (although it's really not as much work as it must sound, since it's potluck), so we also make a point of attending all the community Thanksgiving dinners in our town, which are usually not on the same day so there's no conflict.

My big plan is to work 7pm-7am the night before and the night of Thanksgiving, that will give me 12 hours of holiday pay, plus my regular pay, plus my shift diff pay, plus charge nurse pay which equals $$$$$ for our Disney vacation and Christmas from Santa. :) So I will be ordering Thanksgiving dinner from the Honey Baked Ham Store for our feast - they have the most scrumptious turkey breast (it is just 4 of us), with all of their wonderful sides and desserts.

We like having a big Thanksgiving dinner. However, we discovered Disney World at Thanksgiving and love having it there. So, we are eating at Biergarten this year because they have a traditional Thanksgiving meal. However, when we are home, we do the same thing for Thanksgiving that we do for Christmas. We have appetizers of cheese and crackers, veggies and spinach dip. We have turkey and ham (kids like the ham). I do all the cooking (I don't do that the rest of the year but I do that on these occasions). We have my parents and our two children. Last year, our grown daughter and her husband and four children came from out of state for Christmas dinner as well. We use old china that my mother gave me. We spread everybody out between the dining room and living room (it's really all one area anyway). Last year, since we were not here at Thanksgiving, we made a full meal and brought it to my parents the weekend before. However, this year my brothers will be coming to spend it with them. So, I won't be doing anything special until between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Pumpkin pie is a must. Any other dessert is just a bonus. The kids don't care for that, though, so we make other things for them....like turtle brownies. Oh, the fun begins at Thanksgiving. Actually, shortly after Halloween when the decorations start getting put out!

We have done several different things. When DD was younger DH's brother and his family would come and we would have a giant, traditional feast with myself and SIL cooking. Later with job changes and such we have just had our small family. Usually I still cook but we have gone out a couple of times. But I like leftovers so that isn't the top of the list. Once I ordered the turkey from the grocery with a couple of sides and made more sides. My brother is coming this year and he is a great cook. He is bringing the turkey and will make some sides that our family had as kids that my family doesn't like much....creamed onions for instance. I have a couple new sides I want to try (sweet potatoes and apples) and we will have all the traditional ones.

Do you do all the cooking, most of it or none of it? Its at my house and I make the turkey, green bean casserole, and mashed potatoes.

Do you bake your pies from scatch, buy them or have others bring them?
My aunt brings them and she makes them from scratch. I would make them but she likes to.

How many guests do you usually have? Total of 8 including me and DH,his parents, our son, my mom, aunt, and uncle. We have a small family.

How do you arrnage the dinner, sit down or buffet style?
Sit down

Do you use your good chine, other dinnerware or paper products? Good china, its the only time I use it. Turkey paper plates for dessert

What do you do if you have a small house, where do you put everyone? We move the loveseat against the sliding glass door and turn the table and add another table. It's in the living room/dining area.

Do you plan activites for the children present? No, my son is 2 and is easily entertained.

We are having dinner here around 5:00. Have to work around the one person that has to work. WE have about 15 people. This year everone is helping to cook, Last year I did it all. I use top quality paper products and real silverwear. Kids might get up a game outside but most likely play station before dinner. There will for sure be a ball game on TV at some point. We serve Buffet style.
Menu:
turkey
ham
dressing
sweet potatoes
mashed potatoes
corn dish of some type
green beans

After dinner we alway plan out our black friday shopping day!!!

I :lovestruc thanksgiving!

My family and I love Thanksgiving. It's only 2 weeks away. I'm busy setting some plans into action for ours. So it has me wondering what everybody else does for Thanksgiving?

Do you traditionally have a big dinner?
Yes. We have it at noon. My in-laws always come over, and I love my in-laws. My father-in-law and brother-in-law are both retired farmers, so we always had to have dinner ready so that they could leave and go back home to milk the cows. This way, we get to eat plenty of leftovers for supper too!!

Do you serve appretizers?
Yes, mostly just crackers and cheese, and vegetables with dip.

Do you serve turkey, ham or roast beef?
Turkey, of course!

What sides do you eusually have?
Mashed potatoes, dressing (NOT in the bird), corn, peas, sweet potatoes, homemade cranberry sauce, gravy, homemade bread or rolls.

What's for dessert?
Several pumpkin pies, pecan pie, probably apple and/or peach. This year, just the 2 pumpkins and a pecan.

Do you do all the cooking, most of it or none of it?
My husband and I together do just about all of it. He's in charge of the turkey.

Do you bake your pies from scatch, buy them or have others bring them?
Over they years, I've gone from homemade to having others bring them. Occasionally I've bought, mostly if my kids were having a fund-raiser at school that sold pies.

How many guests do you usually have?
It's varied quite a bit. Usually at least 6. The least has been only 2 extras, the most is 13 or 15 extra.

How do you arrnage the dinner, sit down or buffet style?
It's always a sit-down meal. It takes quite a bit of planning, but it was always important to my daughters to have everyone sitting at one table. I agreed.

Do you use your good chine, other dinnerware or paper products?
Good china, of course! What else is it for, if not Thanksgiving?? We'd have to run 2 loads in the dishwasher, but, it's Thanksgiving!!

What do you do if you have a small house, where do you put everyone?
We have it at our house because it's big enough to put everyone. We had a Christmas dinner at my sister-in-law's once and we could barely exhale. I like my in-laws, but we were so packed, I could not pick up my spoon!

Do you plan activites for the children present?
No. They have always just played with my kids' toys. Who needs the pressure of planned acitvities? Go play and leave us grownups alone! :rotfl:

Thanks to anyone who answers. Hope you have a wonderful time planning your festivities. :cool1:

Oh, we will-especially because WE'RE GOING TO DISNEYWORLD THE DAY AFTER!!!

We have a pretty giant dinner, with around 25 people at our house. We have some appetizers, but no one really eats them. I think we usually just have like vegetables and some cheese and crackers. For dinner, we have about 900 items. We have turkey and occasionally also have a ham. We have the usual side dishes, like salad, stuffing, mashed potatoes, lots of vegetables, rolls, and mac and cheese. Not sure why, but we also randomly have a bunch of Italian items, like chicken parm and pasta. I'm a vegetarian, so I usually make all the vegetable side dishes and many of the desserts. For dessert, this year, we're having apple pie, chocolate cake, Rice Krispy treats, brownies, cookies, and probably more. We don't really plan activities, but we do make sure to have a dance party with our uncle to S.O.S. by the Jonas Brothers at every family gathering. Highly recommend it. :thumbsup2

Our plans vary usually based on DBF's parents plans. 2 years ago we went to their house, they told us not to bring anything but I still took a pear crisp made with pears from our tree, it was a huge hit and everyone told me to bring it every year. Last year they went to PA to be with DBF's sis and her family so we decided to take a break and we went to Mimi's with our family of 4. YUM!!!!!! Sooooooooooo good and so fun for me to not worry about cooking! I made us breakfast that morning but that was it. :) This year we've decided to go to DLR so we will be eating at Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen, I'm super excited to have their Creole Turkey and DBF is looking forward to the Turducken, the girls will probably order off the "regular" menu. :)

Do you traditionally have a big dinner? yes

Do you serve appretizers? no

Do you serve turkey, ham or roast beef? turkey breast and ham

What sides do you usually have? changes every year but always have mashed potatoes, olives and big dill pickles

What's for dessert? pie and brownies since one child hates pie

Do you do all the cooking, most of it or none of it? all of it and I hate to cook

Do you bake your pies from scatch, buy them or have others bring them? from scratch

How many guests do you usually have? none. Occasionally the in laws or my parents will visit during thanksgiving. We used to do a big meal for friends with no where else to go but everyone now has somewhere to go now that we are all older.

How do you arrnage the dinner, sit down or buffet style? sit down

Do you use your good chine, other dinnerware or paper products? Christmas china

What do you do if you have a small house, where do you put everyone? dining room table fits 10.

Do you plan activites for the children present? no

Thanks to anyone who answers. Hope you have a wonderful time planning your festivities. :cool1:

It will be fun seeing everyone's answers. I'm actually not cooking this year since we are going to St. Pete Beach this year. :woohoo:
oops. I tried to put my answers in a different color but it didn't work.

Do you traditionally have a big dinner? Yes

Do you serve appretizers? NO, why spoil everyones appetite

Do you serve turkey, ham or roast beef? Turkey

What sides do you usually have? mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, corn, green bean casserole, dutch salad, cranberry sauce, potato rolls and for my mom saurkraut

What's for dessert? pumpkin roll and pumpkin pie

Do you do all the cooking, most of it or none of it? I do all of the cooking. I have already cooked the turkey put the white meat in one container, dark meat in another, covered it with broth and put it in the freezer. All I have to do is dump it in 2 crockpots to heat it up and make the sides. Saves alot of stress and work on the actual day

Do you bake your pies from scatch, buy them or have others bring them? Frozen pie shells, can of libbys pumpkin pie mix, and a tub of whipped creme. Pumpkin rolls made from scratch. Make up a couple and freeze for xmas use too

How many guests do you usually have? Depends on the year, anywhere from 6 to 25 or more

How do you arrnage the dinner, sit down or buffet style? Buffet style, everything gets thrown into crockpots and nesco roasters with buffet trays. Just turn it on and forget about it. I put the mashed potatoes in a crock too once I mash them. Stuffing is thrown in a crock after baking it. I usually have everything done and the few pans I actually had to cook in are washed dried and put away about 1/2 hour before I expect the first person to arrive.

Do you use your good chine, other dinnerware or paper products? Paper, not going to do dishes except for the serving stuff. I want to be able to enjoy the day too.

What do you do if you have a small house, where do you put everyone? We set up an extra table or two. Really helps that we have a totally open floor plan. People sit wherever. At the tables, in the living room and family room areas, at the kitchen bar. Even had people that sat on cushions at the coffee table.

Do you plan activites for the children present? No, they play with our kids toys
