What are your hobbies/interests

Hey everyone,

There are some busy and talented people on this board. (Loved the stained glass!)

I didn't include travel in my list although I love it. We do travel a lot but with two small kids its either WDW, the beach or to visit relatives. So not very adventurous these days.

Thanks everyone for sharing!

Grooming, Raising and Breeding Goldfish

Hi Nomi,

OK. I am curious. How do you groom a goldfish?

I don't even know what some of your "ology" interests are! Can you enlighten me?

Grooming a goldfish isn't like grooming a dog, per say. It involves raising the goldfish with excellent water quality (0 ammonia, 0 nitrites and nitrates, lots of aeration), good food (fozen/live, veggies, ect), basically raising it so that it's big, healthy, with full colour and show ready. Unfortunately, none of my goldfish are show quality, and since they live at my dad's shop my control of their environment is limited, but all are big and healthy.

Herpetology - study of reptiles
Ichthyology - study of fish
Palaeontology - study of dinosaurs
Evolutionary Biology - Pretty much what it sounds like.

Sounds interesting Nomi, my older Son loves fish and he understands all that better than I do, he has a couple fish tanks one is salt water fish, I call it the Nemo Tank, and another tank with other kind of fish, I don't know much about it :confused3

Thanks for the info. Seems like mine never lived long enough to get dirty. Some never made it home from the pet store.

So are there competitive fish shows like dog shows? I never knew this.

I would really love to have a salt water aquarium one day, but they do seem like a lot of work!

Well, there is quite a lot of misinformation about goldfish. They really aren't the best beginner fish. They get very large, need lots of space and aeration, a completely cycled tank, plus heavy duty filtration. They are, after everything is said and done, a pond fish. They live around 10-30 years, depending on the breed and temperature.

There are indeed fish shows. Goldfish shows are more common in the east, but there are a few in north america too. Mostly as subsections of larger fish expos and shows. Betta showing is quite common as well.

Salt water is a bit more work (especially if you get into reef setups). Besides watching the ammonia, nitrites, nitrates like you would with freshwater, with saltwater you also need to monitor and control the salinity, protein skimmers, live rock, ect. Also, saltwater takes a while longer to cycle than freshwater, a few months to fully settle rather than a few weeks.
