It depends on whether the person has a job yet or not and if so what kind. For graduates entering the professional world I get them a distinctive business card holder that I engrave with a message. When my then boyfriend (now husband) graduated and had an engineering job already lined up I gave him a stainless steel one with a piece of motherboard embedded in the lid. He still uses it. Ones with the college seal on it are always a good choice.
If the graduate is interviewing for professional positions I get the student a leather resume folder. It just looks more grownup when the interviewee pulls one during an interview. Here are some attractive options. http://www.leatherology.com/busines...r-padfolios/?gclid=CIrD-qrx87YCFcuj4Aod1DAADQ They are also usually less expensive than a briefcase and less likely to be given by someone else.
Another appreciated option is a gift certificate to IKEA if the graduate lives near one and is setting up his or her first apartment.
