I wish that were the case here. DS already has a nice suit.Rental tuxes were totally "out" when my DS graduated 3 years ago. All the boys wore suits with smart accessories that fit their personalities. We bought DS a new one that he picked out and had tailored, with 2 shirts and 2 ties (one red and black and one black and red) and a stylish pair of shoes. He also got a haircut that morning and wore a beautiful boutonniere. We wanted him to feel like a million bucks but lucky for us, the bill was only about $500.
I think the tux thing comes and goes, or maybe it's "regional". I haven't tracked along with what the young men are wearing for grad here this season but even for DD's wedding last fall the bridal party men rented matching suits, not tuxes.I wish that were the case here. DS already has a nice suit.
In our region, it's probably mostly tuxedos, but there are always a few guys in suits every year too.
Last year, DS wore a rented tux w/ a vest & bow tie.
This year, I may try to talk him into a nice suit for the prom because he's going to need a new suit the very next month for a family wedding, so it'd be nice if I could purchase him a suit that would do double-duty.
In our district, junior prom is mostly shirt and tie for guys and short dresses for girls, senior prom is mostly tuxedos for guys and long dresses for girls. However, there are always several teens who do their own thing but look nice and respectable.

Same with my daughter last year also.my daughter went last year- all the kids I saw and in the pics had tuxes on- suits are for Jr. Prom.
LOVE kids with their own unique sense of style! One of the sharpest looking (and for sure the most memorable) boys in my DS's class wore something very similar to this:
