What Are You Reading Right Now?

Hey, I just finished Life of Pi today too. What did you think about it? I'm not sure what I'll read next.

In retrospect I really liked it. I had to think about the ending for a while, and then WHAM! It all kind of hit me and I thought WOW that was really something. I'm a total nerd when it comes to fiction though, lit major.

It has so many layers that are not evident from the very beginning. It would be a great book to do a thesis on.

When I first finished it, I thought it was like two different books, before and after the ship, but it all came together at the end.

You lit majors lol, I'm in an early english lit and I don't really care for that type of lit but I have to take it. I agree with your post, the ending was really something. There is so much symbolism in the book and it really has you thinking for a while once you're done reading! It's weird, I like the animal version better than the people version (not as depressing I believe). Overall, it was good and I'm glad I read it. The beginning was VERY slow for me, and there was a lot that was terribly boring but overall it was pretty good.

I've been in a reading slump lately. I started reading, "A year by the sea". Couldn't get into it. I tried several times and then just put it down.

I read that book. It was okay-I liked it mostly because "if" I remember correctly, it took place on the Cape. I bought the book there and the author was having a book signing in Chatham. I think it was a little depressing.

Have you read Barefoot by Elin Hilderbrand? It is a light, easy read that takes place on Nantucket.

Karen

If ya'll want a very good but emotional read I really recommend Rule Number Two: Lessons I Learned in a Combat Hospital by Heidi Kraft. It's about being a psychologist in a Marine unit in Iraq. It talks about the readjustment to being at home and the problems over everyday people being so petty after her tour and she asks who is going to be the psychologist's psychologist.

ETA: here is a link to the book at borders: http://www.bordersstores.com/search...erms=heidi+kraft&mediaType=1&srchType=Keyword

I think you hit upon a big reason I didn't like it. It was depressing. She was going through some heavy life changes, lots of introspection. No plot other than to get through it, so it seemed.

I don't mind a little darkness. I just like some real activity. :upsidedow

I'll keep "Barefoot" in mind! Thanks. :)

I'm reading Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth.

I am taking a break from fiction and so I have been reading entrepreneur books.

I am now reading Mommy Millionaire: How I Turned My Kitchen Table Idea into a Million Dollars and How You Can, Too! by Kim Levine and Sister CEO by Cheryl Broussard.

I am trying hard to build up my businesses. :)

I've just finished a Wendy Holden and am now on chapter 4 of a History of Sweets Fascinating stuff!

I just finished The Time Traveler's Wife. Wow, what an intense read.
I'm waiting for The Secret Life of Bees to come into my libray at some point this week.

I just finished Have You Found Her by the Dis' own Girlbomb, Janice Earlbaum. It was excellent.

I'm going to Belize on vacation next week, so I wanted something to put me in a tropical mood. I'm re-reading Tennessee Williams' The Night of the Iguana, which is set at a Mexican beach resort.

I will be packing a couple of books to read on my trip. One is Clermont, an 18th century Gothic novel and the other is On Holiday: A History of Vacationing.

I just finished Moloka'i, by Alan Brennert. What a sweet, emotional, epic story. It is fiction, but based on the real leper colony in Hawaii throughout the 20th century. It really is a story of the triumph of the human spirit and what we can endure. I found myself crying, and I haven't done that with a book in a long while! I highly recommend it! Took a little bit of time to get into it (maybe 50 pages or so), but I loved it! I have a feeling it is a book that will stay with me for a while.

Bumping up this thread to ask, has anyone reading Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer? I swear this book is so boring it's killing me. Did anyone else have trouble with it? Thanks!

Yep. My bookclub in Alaska read it. I really didn't enjoy it at all. His 'Under the Banner of Heaven' about polygamists is much better.

Thanks, Briarmom. That makes me feel better :) I'm still trying to understand why it's a bestseller. It's a major yawn-fest.

I'm glad to see this thread back! I looked for it and couldn't find it. I'm reading, "Last to know", by Wendi Corsi Staub. The prologue had me hooked! Chilling, unsettling. Great whodunnit already. I'm about 1/3 into it. Hard to put down! I'd recommend it already.

I'm also reading/perusing, "Deceptively Delicious", by Jessica Seinfield. It has some good recipes and tips. I'm going to try a few. And on my bedside table is a book mentioned by, grlpwrd: Mommy Millionaire: How I Turned My Kitchen Table Idea into a Million Dollars and How You Can, Too! The title had me curious! :)

Thanks for the recommedation. I like her books but haven't read this one. Right now, I'm reading Carl Hiasson's "Skinny Dip". So far it's seeming typically funny. I LOVED the Barbara Delinsky book I just finished, "The Secret Between Us" .
