I'm still wondering how someone can be a type of music? lol

Dizparks: "Emo" is not just a type of music... here's the definition according to Urban Dictionary.

An entire subculture of people (usually angsty teens) with a fake personality. The concept of Emo is actually a vicious cycle that never ends, to the utter failing of humanity, and it goes something like this:

1. Girls say they like "sensitive guys" (lie)
2. Guy finds out, so he listens to lame emo music and dresses like a dork so chicks will see that he is sensitive and not afraid to express himself (lie). He dyes his hair black, wraps himself in a stupid looking scarf, develops an eating disorder, and rants about how "nobody understands".
3. Now an emo guy, he meets Emo chick and they start dating, talking about how their well-off suburban lifestyles are terrible and depressing (lie)
4. Emo guy is just too much of a idiot. He's inadequate, he's too depressed to bathe, and has more mood swings than emo chick, and he doesn't even have a menstrual cycle. Emo chick dumps him, saying "It's not you, it's me." (lie) as she drives off with Wayne, the school jock and captain of the football team.
5. Emo guy goes home and cries, proceeds to write a weak song and strum a single string on his acoustic guitar. Another emo chick sees how he is so in touch with his feelings, and the cycle continues.

This is the sad truth of the emo lifestyle/music, and now that I look at how pathetic it really is, maybe the emos DO have something to cry about!

And so that I'm not spamming my own thread with nonsense...

oh ok, but in reality "Emo" really is just a music genre. The people you are talking about are called "Scene Kids." Just thought I'd clear that up for you.

from wikipedia.org:
Definition of Emo.

In its original incarnation, the term "emo" was used to describe the music of the mid-1980s DC scene and its associated bands. Eventually, the DC scene adopted the term "emo-core", short for "emotional hardcore", derived from the fact that, on occasion, members of a band would become spontaneously and literally emotional during performances. The most recognizable names of the period included Rites of Spring, Embrace, One Last Wish, Beefeater, Grey Matter, Fire Party and slightly later, Moss Icon. The first wave of emo began to fade after the breakups of most of the involved bands in the early 1990s.

Starting in the mid-1990s, the term "emo" began to reflect the indie scene that followed the influences of Fugazi, which itself was an offshoot of the first wave of emo. Bands including Sunny Day Real Estate and Texas Is the Reason put forth a more indie rock brand of emo, which was more melodic and less chaotic in nature than its predecessor. The so-called "indie emo" scene survived until the end of the 1990s, as many of the bands either disbanded or shifted their style to the mainstream.

As the remaining indie emo bands entered the mainstream, newer bands began to emulate the more mainstream style, creating a style of music that has now earned the moniker "emo" within popular culture. Whereas, even in the past, the term "emo" was used to identify a wide variety of bands, the breadth of bands listed under today's emo is even more vast.

In all of its forms, emo music generally shares some of the same concepts: personal, meaningful lyrics, usually of an introspective nature, and a deep connection with a band's audience.

Definiton of Scene Kid

The term scene kids is used in reference to members of the emo, post-hardcore, metalcore or Hardcore scenes. It is most commonly applied to those aged between 14 and 18. It is very rare for the label to be applied to anyone under the age of 14, and people over the age of 18 who share similar characteristics to scene kids are usually referred to as scenesters.

Scene kids are usually the trendsetters within their scene, and as such are the first to appropriate new styles and fashions, as well as being the first to abandon outdated or over-exposed ones. Scene kids rarely refer to themselves by this term—it is most commonly used by outsiders and can be seen as being either an insult or pejorative, or a compliment depending on the context in which it is used. As well as being trendsetters, other characteristics perceived as being held by those labelled scene kids include elitism and arrogance directed at those less "scene" (fashionable) than they are. Scene kids are also seen as competitive, in that they often strive to be the first within their scene to adopt a new trend, and also can be regarded mockingly by others, who see their attempts at "keeping up with the Joneses" as only making them appear cool to the select group of other scene kids they surround themselves with, while to outsiders elements of their fashion sense are derided. It is a common misconception that scene kids are goth. This is generally considered offensive by both scene kids and goths. Though both groups show some crossover in style, particularly black hair dye and lip piercings, the lifestyles and music tastes of the two groups are very different.

See that, you just got owned. Do some research before you talk.

Yeah, you totally "owned" me.

Here is yet another another definition.

a) short for the term emotional...in a musical sense
b) music derived in the 80's... with such bands as Rites of Spring, Texas is the Reason, and more.
c) can be used to describe a person who listens to emo, can relate to most of it and then cry because they can relate to it and not just because its emo.

emo music usually contains lyrics which have a desperate side to them.
