What Are You Giving Up For Lent?

I give up sweets for Lent and usually fast on Fridays(and Ash Wednesday). I started giving up pop when I was a kid for Lent.

Alcohol. My family has no faith in me. I like a drink or 2 in the evening. I think I can do it!!!

Swearing, I need to give it up permanently. I only swear at home and usually in private but I still do it. sometimes if there was anyone home, it would get embarassing. My mother was the same way. the only time I heard her really swear was the weekend after my Dad's business building burned down and she was scrubbing filing cabinets in the basement. My Dad and his friends were sitting in the family room, having carried things downstairs for Mom to scrub. One of Dad's friends yelled down and asked my mother to bring him a beer. She used a few loud choice words to reply to him-there was silence up there because my mother was known to be quite a lady, lol!!! Anyway, I'm giving it up.

I do that as well...any time I slip up I have to put a quarter in the swear jar. Whatever is in the swear jar on Easter goes to Mass with me and goes in the poor box. I will admit to certain days where I've just pulled out a five dollar bill and let 'er rip.

This thread is fine in the context of what people are choosing to give up for Lent.

What would not be permitted is a discussion or debate regarding religious tenets or beliefs.

Back to the conversation!

I am giving up fast food. I rely on it too much for quick meals and it is soooo bad for me.

not giving up things, instead attending stations of the cross
every friday evening.

great thread....
a few years ago our pastor said we should not be giving up something for lent but rather.... try to do for others...make someone else's life better.

I have gone with this thought over the past few years...So I have decided this year to live each and every 40 days of lent to the best of my ability and to help my fellow man.

I will try earnestly to be a good person and be the best that I can be.

Lets hope it works:lovestruc

:worship::worship::worship: Couldn't do it...I will use the excuse that it is the only way I keep in touch with some of my family...including my sister who is having a new baby any time now.

This is a good choice. My religion doesn't ask me to give up anything...but I always try.:upsidedow

Candy, cakes, cookies, the sweet stuff. I plan to do more for others, and eat less. I am Catholic but do not give up meat on Fridays, Our Preist says that if the fish costs more than beef is that really the way to go. we will eat meat just not steaks. Like my dad says on a friday at the steak house when mom would get mad at him for ordering a steak. "I will call it sea cow! haha!

If you are of a religion that practices this belief, what are you giving up for Lent?

My family is hoping I give up photography. I guess 200 photos in a day has irrated them. Im not sure yet. I was thinking bread but Im not sure my body could handle that. Ill be watching to see what eveyone else gives up.

:faint: I think I would just about die!!

Anyhow, I am going to try and give up cussing, I gave it up for lent when I was in college, and it did make an impact on me and I hadn't cussed in a long time, but its creeping back in my language so I am going to try and give that up! My words should be for praising the Lord, not bringing others down!

I haven't decided yet what I'm going to give up this year for Lent, we are going to be on a DCL cruise for the first few days so I know I couldn't give up alcohol or desserts :lmao:

I think I'll give up cursing.

DD offered to give up school. Nice try.

I am giving up alcohol, in the past I have managed chocolate, cookies and chips but I rarely eat those any more. So this time I was going to give up wine, but decided on all alcohol.

Me too!

Yep, I have a feeling Facebook is going to be a hard one! But I do plan on using my email account so I can still get in touch with people easily. I'm trying to see if I can get any of my friends to go in on it with me, but no takers so far.

I'm giving up soda. I'm going to try really hard and make it! On Mardi Gras I am totally driving thru Sonic for a Route 44 Dr. Pepper!!
