a private reading with a medium, he has a lot of unnecessary guilt about his father's passing.
Why do people do this? It is like belittling somebody else's idea gives you a special kick. The rest of your reply was thoughtful then you added this special zinger.
I could say that my dh doesn't consider books or DVDs gifts because we buy those year round as we want them. It doesn't add anything to the conversation though. It isn't helpful. It is demeaning to somebody who wants to give those as gifts.
Zhoen said:Aww, hon... I don't think she meant it that way. I don't think she meant to downplay gifts others give, but rather to comment on the reaction of her receiver. I think it was more of a lament, as in "My SO doesn't think XYZ is a gift, so I'm stuck finding something ELSE..." Like your DH and books.
I can understand that... my husband HATES anything practical for a gift (to him, to me is a different story...) It's really hard when someone needs something for example, dress shirts for work, and you buy them a whole bunch for a gift, and he responds "But this is *clothes*, that's not a present!" It is hurtful when someone sneers at a gift you give them, particularly when they imply that the object is a "given" and that a gift should be an "extra."

Interesting, because when I read the title I thought, "hey, I've shopped for him already!" But then I thought "what did I buy?" and also, "where did I hide it?"
So... hopefully I have something really great hidden somewhere in the house.![]()
