What are we doing wrong finance wise?

Well, he is 40some years old, never married, no kids and started saving for his own retirement 20 years ago. And as I said, he's never had a lot - but that is because he isn't materialistic. So a few years off isn't putting him behind the same way it would someone who had three kids, or put off savings. This is a guy where it isn't that you are looking at the cool car and the swimming pool and the designer kitchen and wondering where it comes from - this is a guy who manages to make ends met in a small home, with a modest car and no job at all.

I wouldn't do it myself. But I have different financial needs.

I live in a small town where there are plenty of people who compare "who's got what". My DH and I have had people treat us like second class citizens because we live in the decent-but-not-outrageous side of town instead of the oversized-mcmansion-near-the-lake side of town. Yet, I can virtually guarantee (from conversations we've had with folks) that we are doing better financially than many of the people who've looked down their noses at us.

Many of the folks who look like they have money spend every dime they make, have large mortgages, have credit card debt, and lease their automobiles. They have little or nothing put away for a rainy day, for retirement, or for their kids' college. We, on the other hand, put away a good percentage for retirement and college savings. And we have no debt other than the mortgage (took several years of frugal living to get to that point).

It's interesting to me, because now that we've had things paid off for a while, any extra money we get (raises, bonus, tax refunds, etc...) is money we can spend on "extras". We're getting to where we have money to spend on even nicer vacations, on sleepaway camp for the kids, nicer cars, etc... We still don't go hog wild and we don't see any reason to upgrade to a bigger house, but it's funny to see some of these people trying to figure out how we can do this stuff that many of them can't. They just have to have you pigeonholed... and we aren't fitting in to their categorization system. :rotfl2:

Honestly we really are not in debt. We do have our $1800 credit card but that pretty much gets paid off monthly. We just depend on it does that make sense? We are saving for our future 401k wise. We are pretty frugal too. I am in no way high maintenance. Sometimes it is just hard to live in our neighborhood where people seem to "have it all". I don't mean to sound like I am complaining. I know we are lucky. I was just feeling really down. Catch up wise, I was just referring to saving for wants and not depending on our credit card.

We used to (still do but don't use it anymore) have an AMEX card that we used. It became the WORST cycle between having to pay it off each month but then needing to use it because we could pay cash for everything AND pay it off. It was horrible. We finally got away from that but it was the worst feeling. It was very scary when I took the Amex out of my wallet and could no longer just go and get something I "needed" when I thought I needed it.

Good Luck ... glad to see you are feeling better.
