What are these G-mail things I keep seeing?

I keep seeing these on the boards, and by skimming the posts, I don't understand. Can someone give me a quick explaination?

It is google's free email accounts..like yahoo or hotmail. But you can only get in by invitation only and there is much more storage.


That is the quickest way to explain it.
