What are the options for evening entertainment?

We have our first trip to Disneyland coming up this summer - end of June/beginning of July (we leave July 4th). What are the options for evening entertainment? I know about World of Color and I’m assuming there is a fireworks show at the castle. Is that it or is there anything else we should plan on seeing/doing? As far as World of Color, if we don’t do the dessert party, do we just walk up to get a spot? Is the dessert party recommended?

Thanks!

Fantasmic is currently closed, but is expected to be up and running by next summer. It is on the Rivers of America (ie. Tom Sawyer's Island). Viewing is from New Orleans Square.

The fireworks projections are on the castle, Small World, Main Street and on the waters in Rivers of America (traditionally immediately after Fantasmic).

Can we watch Fantasmic and the castle fireworks show in the same night? Is it possible to see the castle from where we’d be watching Fantasmic?

We’ve seen Fantasmic at Disney World several times. Are the shows similar? If so, we might skip it at Disneyland.

We are going in early January and the options for evening entertainment look VERY sparse.

We don't really know what the Fantasmic show will be like, as it is being at least a little redesigned due to the issue with the dragon.
You can't really see the castle from the Fantasmic area, they are quite separate. Having said that, a few years ago, we had watched the fireworks in front of the castle one night amd the next night we did Fantasmic dessert party. I enjoyed the experience from the dessert party area more. You could see a decent amount of the fireworks, projections were shown on the water, we were seated without a crowd jostling us/blocking the kids views, and were able to catch a glimpse of tinkerbell flying too. It is definitely not as good a view as in front of the castle and you miss some things, but at that time it was an enjoyable option. I wouldn't try to walk from Fantasmic to the castle as it will be pretty packed with people (usually!)

World of colour has a virtual queue to get into the viewing areas, that opens at noon each day. Although you can watch from around the pier area and there is a standby/walk up area if there is space. Going to the later show is much easier to get.
We did the dessert party option this time, and I am glad we did. I almost didn't purchase it as it is so much money, especially for a larger group, but it made a big difference to our day. Mostly it is the seats, being able to sit at the end of a long day instead of having to stand makes it easier to enjoy the show. The view was great and really let you take in the spectacle. The drinks and desserts are just the cherry on top.

Fantasmic is closed. We don’t know what the new show will exactly be. It will most likely still be on Tom Sawyer island. You cannot see the castle or fireworks projections from there. However, in the past, people could see the fireworks from the Fantasmic viewing area. I don’t know if the music is piped into that area though, and you can’t see any projections.

EDIT: Fantasmic at Disneyland is a much more up close and enveloping experience. It’s excellent! The show at DHS is mediocre at best in comparison. We don’t bother seeing at WDW anymore. The shows themselves are sort of similar but have different characters and details.

During Disneyland's "off season" the parks often do not have nighttime spectaculars on weeknights, only Fridays-Sundays. January falls during the "off season." They typically show World of Color nightly during the off season, including weeknights, but World of Color will be down for a refurbishment in January of 2024. Disneyland typically only releases show schedules 4-6 weeks in advance. This is, unfortunately, a compromise when going the Disneyland during a non-holiday or summer period - no guarantee of nighttime shows on weeknights. Shows are also often cancelled if windy (see below) or if raining (particularly fireworks). It really only rains at DL during the winter, with summer rain being very rare.

As for summer (June-July), Disneyland will be showing nightly entertainment of all shows. This means World of Color nightly, Fireworks nightly with projections, and Fantasmic nightly (as someone already noted). Yes, you can see the fireworks from the Fantasmic viewing location, but you will miss some of the castle effects that can only be seen from the hub/Main Street.

I do not recommend skipping Fantasmic at DL if you've seen it at WDW - the show is different and frankly better at DL. The caveat being that a "new" version of the show will be premiering at DL next May - we do not know yet what, if any, changes they will be making except for removal of the previous (and impressive) dragon animatronic. To see Fantasmic, you basically need to do a dining plan, which can be as simple as a to-go option from Hungry Bear. There is some limited standby, but they mostly did away with that after Covid. During the summer, Fantasmic will be shown nightly at 9:00 and 10:30 - the later show is always less crowded.

For World of Color, there is a "virtual queue" you can join on the DL app earlier in the day to secure your viewing spot. This is included in the price of admission (i.e. no additional cost to join the virtual queue). They typically show WOC at 9:00 and 10:15. DCA typically closes at 10:00 during the summer, with the show occurring slightly after closing. DL typically stays open until Midnight. DL fireworks are almost always at 9:30 nightly during the summer. DL fireworks do get cancelled often due to winds at higher elevations - so if you have a multi day trip try to see the fireworks as early as possible in case you have to try again. Fantasmic and World of Color are not cancelled as often due to winds.

One final note - if you are there on July 4th they sometimes show a special July 4th show on that one day only. I recommend seeing the typical (non-holiday) version if that's a choice you have to make, but see both if you can. They typically also add a "tag" for July 4th to World of Color but still show the regular version after.

Most importantly, check the DL schedule as your trip gets closer. About 6 weeks out for hours, and 4 weeks out for entertainment. The summer is usually very consistent with both hours and entertainment. DL is usually always open 8:00 - Midnight and DCA 8:00 - 10:00. WOC typically at the two times I noted above. Fantasmic and Fireworks as I noted earlier.

Did they expand the dining section areas after COVID? Never got a chance to see F! after COVID and am curious what changed in terms of standby.

Pretty much the whole front area is taken up by dining packages…Blue Bayou, Hungry Bear, whatever the other one was…I always did HB. Standby is behind that all around. Really, it’s worth the price of a hamburger (which you can ask for in lieu of whatever special dinner they are offering) to have a space but if you have a family, I understand it can get pricey.

Fantasmic in DL is SO MUCH BETTER than WDW…the intimacy of it is beyond compare! You are so close to the action, especially when Murph was still in the picture. I’m lucky I got to see his last performance before his unfortunate exit.

I found the WDW version to be a little long when it didn’t really add to the story but I get that you want people to feel like they got their monies worth. Being able to watch fireworks from Rivers of America is a bonus and a perfect way to end the evening.

They do show the projections for the fireworks shows on the Rivers of America water screens- they're even doing this now while F! is down. The lights are dimmed, music is piped in etc. Disney actually lists it as an official alternative fireworks viewing area (similar to IASW). During the holiday fireworks shows, it even "snows" in the area at the end.

That said, there is something special about watching the fireworks at the castle and there are some effects (depending on the fireworks show) that you can really only see from that viewing area. But watching them on the RoA is a decent alternative if you are trying to fit in F! and fireworks the same night.

Can you please explain the dining package? I’m thinking maybe I book a dinner at a certain restaurant and then I’m guaranteed seating to Fantasmic. If that’s correct, is it any sit-down restaurant? Do I need to let them know that I plan on seeing Fantasmic that evening?

You have the general idea, yes. You do the F! Dining package at one of the designated restaurants and then get a pass to access a reserved area for that restaurant. Before the F! dragon disaster, the three restaurants that offered this were Blue Bayou, River Belle Terrace and Hungry Bear. The first two are sit down with HB being the "grab and go" option. In all cases you do need to book ahead (even HB) for F! and they have specific menus for F! dining. We can't know for sure that they will offer the same options or locations when F! returns but I'm sure information will be coming once it's closer to F! resuming.

In addition to what @pharmama said, all options, except River Belle Terrace, were sitting on the ground in front of the river. Blue Bayou provided a cushion for you to keep; it’s a nice F! themed cushion. River Belle Terrace had an option where you could sit outside the restaurant and watch while you eat. I don’t know how good the view is, since it’s pretty far back but higher than the ground where you sit.
