What are the best criteria for finding a financial planner?

I know this has been discussed in the past at some point but I can't find any threads. We need to change financial planners because I believe ours is charging too many fees. We get hit w/an annual fee for each account opened & contributions are charged a fee as well. I'm guessing that's not the best gameplan plus the investments have not done very well IMO. We set it up because at the time, we didn't really have a direction & hoped he'd help us more than we'd done on our own. At this point, I think we would have done just as well staying on our own judging from the investment returns.

What advice can you give? Thanks in advance because I know there are several that can give great pointers!!
