what are popular UY's?

We went around and around trying to figure out what UY to look for when we bought, and then I saw Doc say that some UY's are still available at SSR, by which I infer that some were more popular than others, so...

What UY's do you all have, and why did you pick them? Anyone know what the popular ones are?

This is mostly curiosity, but I wonder if it would affect the booking windows at all.

I don't think there is any signifcant difference in popularity of Use Years. In the case cited, it just meant that when they were selling March Use Years (as an example), not all were sold before proceeding on to sell April .

DVD retains 2-4% ownership at each resort to use to maintain inventory during times rooms are unavailable for rehab/maintenance.

There are no Use Years for January, May, July or November (for resaons I'm not aware of).

I spent some time reading these boards and thinking over that issue and the main thing that I came up with is to base it on when you are most likely to take your vacations over the next 30 to 40 years (as if that is possible to do!)

Our family likes to go in the March-June time period, so a March use year worked out well for us. In the event that we have to cancel a trip (and do so in a timely fashion) we will still have plenty of time to reschedule within the remaining 6-9 months of our use year. Or put in the negative, if we planned to vacation every summer in July, we would not want an August use year.

DVC tends to sell a use year that is about 4 to 5 months prior to sale date. I believe that is so they can effectively take advantage of the Magical Beginnings points they get back and so that buyers still have time to bank their first year allotment if they want to.

As Doc says they do not completely sell out a use year before moving to the next month. In addition to keeping an ownerhip interest, I belive they keep some points available for add ons - Disney requires that the add on contracts they sell have the same use year as the original contract.

Points are equally spread out over the 8 use years. Unless you have to cancel a trip that is scheduled late in your use year, it makes absolutely no differnce when your use year happens to be. Also, people's preferred travel times tend to change over the years - what starts out as a "perfect use year" for you, may not end up to be so perfect.

Anyway, DVC will let you choose a use year if you ask and the points are available. Most people jsut take wht Disney is currently selling - so it may seem that some use years are more "popular", depending on when you read the boards and how many new buyers are posting.

Best wishes -

We weren't offered a choice and frankly we didn't care. We have a February use year for our points at SSR. Use year to me doesn't matter. The only thing it does is dictate banking schedules and when your points will renew. I wouldn't let use year bother you at all. Just take what they give you.

I feel that UY's are very important. I need to know that, if due to illness or a change in plans, that I can cancel my ressie and not lose my points. To some people, it doesn't matter, but to others, it does. If it matters to you, please don't just take what they give you....a few minutes of inquiry could give you 49 years of happier DVC ownership.

Yeah, we got a June UY which I liked because it gives us the whole summer and fall before banking windows, but then I think, what if I want to do the flower and garden thing at Epcot in May? So really, I can talk myself into any UY.

Now I'm wondering if we should consider getting another small contract with an opposite UY so that we can just use the points from whichever contract makes the most sense for the trip we're thinking of. But then you can't combine points from the two so easily. So I guess I really don't know! You'd just have to be really sure of your dates if they're in the last month of your UY.

oh yes May trips with a June use year - done it!

I am also happy with a June use year - when my niece and nephew were younger it was very usefully. Now they just go to WDW on their fall break - Sept.

We just took what they gave us, and I can see all kinds of reasons travel schedules would change over the years, so I don't think it is worth stressing over which UY.

Our Guide suggested we take the December use year since we travel either the week before Christmas of the first week of June. This puts us in the 100% banking window if we have to cancel a trip. It was a very good suggestion.

We have a February use year, mostly because we wanted BCV and one popped up! But I think it works out well because (for the next 10 years) we'll vacation during school spring vacations which are Feb and April. But if we have to cancel, we'll have most of the year to use up our points.

My sister and i got the same use year and then were able to ask for the same use year for my parents. It just makes things easier to keep track and if we want to vacation at the same time. We all have June.
