Florida is not enforcing this law for now. You will (most probably) be fine. You can get an international license for 25$ at your local CAA office. If you're driving your own car you don't need it anyhow unless you get arrested! So I'd say get one only if you're renting and absolutely don't want to take any risk.

The only fly in ointment now is whether your car insurance would use the law as a loophole to not pay the claim if you were involved in an accident. We are going to Florida on the 24th. If I need to get an IDP I don't have time to do it by mail so it means a 6 hour round trip driving to the nearest CAA office in Halifax plus a wasted day: easily another $100. beyond the cost of the permit.
Will be talking to my insurance people on Monday.

We have time to get it one day next week (we leave on the 22) so we'll be getting it because of the Insurance loophole mentioned above. I don't want to take any chances.
