what are codes?

I keep seeing things on codes- what is an AP code? are there different codes for diffent hotels and from different places? we have AAA and I know they have a discount, is this the same as a code? We have never gotten a discount when staying on property before, just paid whatever the travel agent said it was, but am thinking of staying at Poly next Feb. and could definitely use a discount! Thanks!
