What American foods should I try?

They really don't have pancakes or waffles in Aussie land? You learn something new everyday.
Just so there's no confusion, I'm not sure if they do or do not have pancakes and waffles in Australia. When I lived in the UK (mid 1980's) they did not have them in the England so it made me aware that they aren't popular in some countries. A family member in Canada once sent my DH's brother (who lives in the UK) a large jug of real maple syrup for Christmas. DH's brother's reaction to this was "Yuck! What am I supposed to do with this?"

Pumpkinfish- in Australia, jelly is JELLO. Do you mean peanut butter and JAM? I gave this to some aussie kids while we lived there and they were polite enough to finish it- but really really didn't like it!

LOL. See what I mean about learning something new every day?!?!

Had no idea sbout that. And yes, I did mean "jam". :)

Seems your interest lies in American junk food, not our multitude of cuisines...that's probably a good thing since we don't think Orlando is the best place to get authentic American cuisine. Well, at least not the touristy areas.

You may or may not have these down under...my work colleagues in Melbourne only talk about beer so I've no idea about 'normal' food for ya'll. :)

1) Warm Apple Pie or Apple Crumble with ice cream.
2) Candy or Caramel Apples.
3) Frozen Chocolate Bananas.
4) Turkey Legs (not really junk food).
5) Any snack product from 'Lays'...they're one of the few national brands that make pototo chips (crisps), taco type chips, various salsas etc.
6) Hershey bars.
7) Any candy in the store on Main Street.
8) Any beer that is a 'porter'. Mostly dark beers without the weight of a stout, made in either the lager or ale style depending on the brewer.
9) The Kitchen Sink at Beaches & Cream at the BeachClub.

If you were coming to Philadelphia, I'd add cheesesteaks (1 word), Goldenberg peanut chews, Tastycakes, soft pretzels, scrapple, and pork roll.

Happy munching.
Joe

Joe !! You would not give her scrapple!!! Say it ain't so!!!

Thanks everyone for your replies :flower: !
Here in Australia we do have pancakes and waffles.....but they are definately not commonly eaten at all. We have pancake mix in the supermarket but I would say that most people here would usually eat toast with vegemite or jam or some other topping, cereals such as weetbix/special K etc, or fruit for breakfast. Most people wouldn't eat peanut butter and jam (jelly) either. For lunch people here eat things such as ...salad sandwiches, soups, pasta dishes, pies, quiches, salads. For dinner....pasta, rice with topping such as chicken, BBQ steak and salad/chicken and salad, baked potato etc. Here an entree is what is called an appitiser in the US and preceeds the main meal. We also don't have side dishes (I have noticed in DW a hot dog comes with chips) , here you would just have a hot dog on it's own. Most people are very health conscious and eat fairly healthy foods and this is promoted a lot in schools (junk food is now banned in most pre schools!) And primary schools (?elementary school) are only allowed healthy things/low fat foods in the canteen (not a sit down cateen but one which the Mums/Dads run and sell salad rolls/ fruit cups etc). Of course people still eat fast food and junk too!! My fave Aussie treats are Tim Tams (choc creme biscuit covered in choc) Cherry ripe (cherry covered choc bar) , Violet crumble (honeycomb choc bar), milo (choc malt drink) and lots more!!!! :mickeybar

LOVE that Cherry Ripe too! I'd forgotten about that!

You must have a hot dog from Casey's on Main Street. Can't get any more American then that!...

I would absolutely agree (I love Casey's!!) and don't forget the cheese-fries! :lovestruc

Things I miss from Australia .... twisties (especially chicken flavour), crunchies, chocolate eclairs (the lollies not the pastry), custard (in the container like milk) .. yum my brother and I would just drink it straight from the carton (not the same carton), of course tim tams, (especially double dipped?), milo, meat pies and sausage rolls.

Luckily I've found plenty of yummy stuff here, since moving to the US. I must say my son gets weird looks when he takes his vegemite sandwiches to school though!

You don't expect me to eat it, do you?

Good to see you've come to your senses!! Do you think it's a good idea to suggest such a thing to our allies though? This could cause an international troubles! :earboy2:

Do you have popcorn Down Under? If not, you absolutely must try popcorn. I could live on it! That's all I can think of at the moment.

Becky

You need to try biscuits and gravy, fish tacos, chicken fried steak, and a hot beef/turkey sandwich...also potato or macaroni salad, cobb salad, and guacamole. Yummy. Leave the nasty junk food alone...you might as well eat the wrapper.
Edited to add fried okra, gumbo, fried catfish, blackberry cobbler, cornbread, pumpkin pie, turkey with stuffing, cranberry sauce, and candied sweet potatoes. Hope you're staying awhile !!! If you really wanted to experience America you would also add Frito Pie, Spam, Kraft Mac and Cheese, Rice-a-Roni, and Hamburger Helper.

Don't know if there's pizza in Australia, but it's very popular in the USA! I eat pizza at least once a week.

Grits with butter and salt...mmmm...or butter, salt, and cheese. Yum! Also, hash brown potatoes. Both grits and hash browns are generally considered breakfast food, but my mother-in-law (who is from the Deep South) makes amazing jalapeno cheese grits to go with boiled shrimp.

Peanut butter on saltine crackers. A snack that can substitute for lunch!

The pecan pie tartlet in the Main Street Bakery at the Magic Kingdom. You will think you have died and gone to heaven.

A root beer float (root beer is carbonated and non-alcoholic--put a scoop of vanilla ice cream in it, that's the "float" part).

Sweet potatoes with butter and salt.

Corn bread with butter--somebody else mentioned this--it's delicious!

It's retribution for vegemite and Crocodile Dundee 2.

Fair warning, if it says 'Philadelphia' or 'Philly' anything (cheesesteaks come to mind), it ain't.

And I don't recall anyone mentioning BBQ. Not that it's a single cuisine, but just thinking of all the wonderful varieties of BBQ is making me hungry....and for clarification, what ya'll might call a Barbie (sp?) we call just a grill. Real BBQ is cooked low and slow.

Is there anywhere in Orlando you can get boiled peanuts? Cause I sure miss eating them.

Produce stands, flea markets, and some convenience stores (most of the independently owned ones). If you are really desparate, Super Walmart has them in a can. DH swears the best ones come from flea markets, though I cannot attest to that as I cannot stand boiled peanuts!

After reading all this, I'm getting a little hungry. ;) Your country sounds wonderful - if it wasn't for the 23 hr. flight & the $2,300, I would go. :p Nobody failed to mention one of the best snacks on a hot day - waffle ice cream. It's ice cream in between two waffles, & it really cools you off. :teeth: Also, chololate milkshakes, but maybe that's like the Milo that you mentioned. :confused3

White castle hamburgers. They dont have a franchise in Florida but you can buy them frozen at alot of the grocery stores in Florida. There even great nuked with a microwave.
