What age do you consider to be "elderly"?

A 64 year old man was murdered here. One of the TV stations is calling him an "elderly" man. My station is just describing him as a "64 years old".

Is 64 elderly to you? It isn't to me, however, at least in California, in regards to "Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly", the law says residents have to be a minimum of 59 years old to live there. So the state is saying "elderly" starts at age 59.

{{shudder}} I guess it's at least technically correct then. I used to think it was hilarious when my DH began being offered "senior's discounts" when he reached 55. Laughing out of the other side of my face now that I'm approaching 5-0 myself and it's palpable how many people consider me "old".

It's probably time for that TV station to hire some new "talent".

Unless you're like 95, then you're old no matter what you think.

;)

:D

My mom was in a care facility and there were 2 ladies there in their late 90's who had been living with and were being cared for, by their children. But in both cases, they had to move to the care facility because their CHILDREN had died of old age. One lady was 98 and her daughter died at age 80.

I'd say 60 and over is elderly.

When I think elderly I think more of the persons health vs age. Elderly to me is someone frail, needs assistance walking (steadying hand, walker, cane), hands may shake, maybe oxygen.

My parents are in their 60's. No way would I consider them elderly. They are extremely active, fit and healthy. One of my Grandmas is in her 80's. She is also active and has none of the issues above. My other Grandma I would say is elderly. She has several of the above issues.

To me there is also a difference between elderly and senior citizen.
