What advice would you give my friend about this situation?

Had I known I would not have asked for yours.

Thank you to everyone else who responded with helpful comments. I really do appreciate it.

well, there's the joy of posting in a public forum. All sorts of people are free to respond.

I love America.

A house needs continually upkeep, even minor repairs. Without it, in a decade or so the house will be in shambles.

This is great advice! My FIL had Alzheimer's and refused to do (or let us do) any sort of upgrading or even basic maintenance on his house. He passed away last March and we inherited the house. So for we've spent nearly $60K on it, a good percentage of which could have been avoided if it had been maintained over the years. For instance, he wouldn't agree to painting the exterior (wood) siding and, after his death, we had to replace all of it at a HUGE cost.

My goodness, aren't we cheery this morning. As a matter of fact I saw him Sunday and he did ask for my advice and I didn't know what to tell him. He doesn't like his house the way it is and yes he is depressed. So maybe I should just chalk it up to depression.

Why get snarky when you didn't give all the facts up front? You asked if it could be psychological but didn't mention depression. :confused3 It's a message board- no biggie. Just clarify and move on.
