Canadians Traveling to the USA in 2025

USA citizen here:

Quebec City is beyond wonderful. We're been there twice in recent years.

In 2 weeks, we head to the Canadian Rockies. This will be our second visit. We typically don't repeat our travels, but there's something so alluring to us about Canada.

We've yet to do the Nova Scotia area, but have done the western part including Vancouver and Victoria. Nova Scotia is next on the list.

We are not against spending our money in the US or elsewhere. It has much more to do with our preference and comfort level. We actually had a trip planned to Portugal (nothing booked thankfully), and changed our mind. The world is so upside down and we were more comfortable doing something that we are familiar with.
Don't forget Newfoundland! So pretty and you'll find all of the Maritimes welcoming beyond the imagination!

Stats Canada has released statistics for July, giving the year over year drop (or rise) in Canadians visiting the USA. The drop in tourism which started in January continues:

-CAR- -AIR-
+7% +4.6% Dec
+1% -1.4% Jan
-23% -2.4% Feb
-32% -14% Mar
-35% -20% Apr
-38% -24% May
-33% -22% June
-37% -26% July

I was surprised that the July statistics are as low as they are. I figured that there would be an uptick in Canadian families visiting the US during the school holiday season.

In July, the year over year drop in Americans visiting Canada by car was -7.4%, but the number of Americans flying to Canada increased by a modest 0.7%.

I have also tracked down statistics giving the drop in California wine exports to Canada. The year-over-year drop in wine exports, per month, are:

-93.2% - April
-97.2% - May
-96.8% - June

So, American wine exports to Canada are almost down to zero. The fact Canadians tend to buy premium California wines makes this drop even more severe for California wine producers. "Hell hath no fury like a Canuck scorned."

Unfortunately, the Saskatchewan (where I was born) and Alberta (where I currently live) governments are trying to appease That Man by allowing US alcohol imports to resume. Neville Chamberlain's attempts at appeasement with Hitler didn't work prior to WW2, and Saskatchewan's and Alberta's attempts at appeasement with That Man won't work now.

The most recent poll results I have seen, which predate the 51st State threats by a month or so, indicated that roughly 20% of the citizens of Alberta and Saskatchewan support That Man. I still have many relatives that live in Saskatchewan, and many (probably most) are supporters of That Man. At least, I know they were supporters prior to the 51st State nonsense, but maybe their views have changed. Perhaps I'll do a post on that topic in a day or two,

I realize the irony and hypocrisy of me supporting a Canadian tourism boycott, while writing a post while sitting in my room at All-Star Sports drinking a US beer. Perhaps I'll do a post on that topic, too, in a day or two.

One final thought: MY DEFINITION OF AN ALBERTAN: An Albertan is a person who was born in Saskatchewan, currently lives in Alberta, but who'd move to BC in a second if they got a good job offer.

How do you define an "uptick" in this sense -- vs the prior month? The stats you show are year-over-year, which generally means same month one year prior. So July 2025 showed fewer travelers than July 2024; but July 2025 may still have been more travelers than June 2025 (an "uptick"). That's the problem with only looking at percentages because it give no idea of the base.

I expected that the drop in July, when compared to July 2024, would be somewhere between -10% to -20%, and not the -37% it turned out to be. Basically, I assumed that during the summer school holiday, there would still be a lot of Canadian parents doing things like (for example) taking their kids to Disneyland or Disney World, or taking the kids to visit their grandparents in (say) Seattle. It surprises me that the boycott continues to grow in strength.
