What about Tonga Toast?

I've heard everyone talking about Tonga Toast and this year we are thinking about trying some. How good actually is it and what is it made of?

Most people that I have heard from love the Tonga Toast. I'll let someone else who knows better explain to you exactly what it is. I tried it once, and while it was good, I don't think I'd order it again. I am just not a huge fan of something that sweet so early. But it was good!

My parents and I went there one morning of our last xmas trip . The night before my father and I dined at V&A's and I was not up for Tonga Toast.

But, my mother had it and like it. It was very sweet, almost like a dessert. It is basically a big brick of french toast stuffed with banana's with alot of sugar.

I plan on going back so I can get one on our next trip (and when I say next trip I mean the trip that will start in less then three days, LOL, I can't wait).

It's even better than it sounds:D Some people share an order and order something that isn't so sweet (i.e. eggs benedict) so you don't o.d. on sugar/sweet first thing in the morning. It really is worth a try:earsboy:

Even if you are a follower of Atkins, it is one of the few foods actually worth going off your diet for. It is THAT GOOD!

Just to add a counterpoint to all the rave reviews....I tried it a few trips back - and I have to say thought it was totally over-rated! I have a sweet tooth as well, so it wasn't that.

Still, certainly worth trying if you are in the vicinity to make up your own mind, I just wouldn't go out of my way for it...

It is also very, very greasy. So much so that I was sick for the entire day that I ate it. I don't think I'd order it again but maybe I'd have a bite of someone else's!

Take bread (I think sourdough) cut very thick. Stuff with bananas and then coat the bread in eggs (like French Toast). Unlike French Toast, you then deep fry it.

Lots of cinnamon and sugar and powdered sugar. And, of course, maple syrup on the side to pour over the whole thing - because there is no such thing as too much grease and sweet.

Very rich, very sweet, very greasy. Very good, but I'm a fan of splitting it with someone getting an omelette. I can't imagine being able to eat a whole order by myself - although I'm sure people do. If you like deep fried donuts and deep fried banannas, you will probably like Tonga Toast.

I have heard they will bake or grill it for you if you don't want it deep fried.

Tonga Toast, along with Dole Whips, should be in an FDA recognized exotic food group by themselves. During my last trip to WDW in December, I didn't make time for Tonga Toast. I regret it every day.;)

Seriously, it is very sweet, and it is greasy. But I sure do like it!

DH and I just returned from Disney, and hubby ate tonga toast for breakfast, as he traditionally does, every year on the last morning of our stay. He has actually been eating tonga toast since the early 80's, when his parents took him there as a kid. We were talking to the waiter, and he said that tonga toast has actually been on the menu since the Polynesian resort opened, and that it is the most ordered item in the Kona Cafe. It is so popuar that once they tried to take it off the menu, and there was outrage. In fact it was only off the menu for a total of 6 days. Anyway, it is quite sweet, I only like to have a bite or two. But it is a delicious treat. Also, if you do go to Kona Cafe for breakfast, make sure you have the 100% Kona coffee pressed pot. It is to die for!

I've eaten tonga toast 3 times now. It is good but too much for one person. It was getting sickening to me before I was done. I also got heartburn from it and all the grease involved (and I take a prescription for acid every morning). I think I'll have to skip it from now on. Just too greasy.

I love the stuff! I plan on making a special trip over to the Poly to get some more! Actually I have made it at home but there's something about dining on it at Kona Cafe!:D

TC:cool:

It would be tasty, but there's so much grease that it really masks the flavor. You can literally see the grease pooled on the bread and all over the dish. We have asked for it grilled before and that definitely made it much better. Before we knew that was an option, however, I got it the regular way, deep-fried, and I couldn't eat more than 3 bites since there was just way too much grease.

We love Tonga Toast and have been eating it on different trips since 1980. It is definitely too much for one person though. You'll get sick it's so sweet. We usually order what we want for breakfast and then order a seperate order of TT. We place it in the middle of the table and everyone takes bite size slices from it. That way we still get to taste it but no one ends up sick for the day. It's almost a tradition now.

is it worth going to Kona cafe just to try this infamous tonga toast? We like to do one breakfast out and so we are definitely doing BOMA's bfst buffer. But all this talk about tonga toast.. I love sweets but it sounds like this might be too sweet for morning... But I think I could handle it. LOL. So should I make a special trip?

I've had the Tonga Toast twice. The first time was about 3 years ago and I loved it. Had it again a few months ago and it was so greasy I had to send it back. The server looked at it and agreed with me. She took it back and they brought me a brand new one. Sometimes if the oil isn't hot enough the bread absorbs too much oil.

I am so jonesn' for some tonga toast........I can taste it now. Man o man that is some good eats.

We made a special trip this past July over to the Poly just for the Tonga Toast, plus it's nice to visit the Poly again. I think it's worth it, but I like doing and seeing a lot of different things while I'm in WDW. If you've never tried it before then it's definitely worth it.

Kona is our favorite breakfast spot! I do like the Tonga Toast, but my favorite is the bananna pecan pancakes with pecan butter! YUUUM!!!! I am sure you will find something to love at Kona, even if it is not the Tonga Toast! :Pinkbounc
