What about a wedding gift for a supervisor?

Sorry for another wedding gift question...

My supervisor is getting married in October. We have a small team of 5 including my supervisor. He has been my supervisor for 5 years. It is a second wedding for him and also his fiance, who I met briefly once when they were dating. I do not socialize with anyone from work, but he is great.
The wedding is out of town, about an hour away. I don't want to go to the reception (and probably couldn't convince DH to go). I would consider going to the ceremony, but that is a long way to drive for a short ceremony.

So, what would be an appropriate gift for my supervisor? I feel sort of weird giving cash, or would that be fine? Possibly a gift card? How much? They have 4 kids between them. They are merging two households and have not registered for much.

Our team is part of a larger dept, and every time some one gets married or has a baby, that person's team passes around a card for everyone in the dept to sign and donate money for a cake and giftcard. My supervisor has asked us not to do this. Would you respect his wishes, or maybe just buy a cake ourselves for the dept and not take donations?

Thanks for your opinions!!!

If it is appropriate, get a bottle of wine and a nice card.

Another option would be a family membership to the local zoo or something similar so they can work on blending the families with a fun activity.

I would otherwise repsect your supervisor's wishes and not initiate the corporate card/cake. Some people do not like that type of attention in the workplace.

Just had two work friends get married in the last month or so. A group of us pooled together and bought a Target gift card for one and I bought a Target gift card for the other. It was low key and private.

My Husbands manager was just married we did get them a gift card for Bed Bath Beyond where they were registered but I din't want to hunt around for the items. We gave $100.00. They wrapped it and put it in a small box.:)

Your supervisor may feel that it would be unethical to accept a gift of any sort from his employees, and there may be corporate policies against doing so. It could also be construed as a conflict of interest. Why don't you get a nice card and have everyone sign it?

I think a nice card would be fine. If you really want to give a gift, maybe a nice bottle of wine or champagne. If he doesn't want a gift, I'd respect his wishes.

Thanks for all the input. I definitely need to get him a gift from myself and DH. We are invited to his wedding.
There is no corpoprate policy about not accepting gifts and he didn't say he didn't want a gift. The only thing he stated was that he does not want a collection taken from the dept. And based on your input, we will skip that.
Thanks again for your suggestions!!
