You know, the thing the mattress usually sits upon (unless you are a college student and it is on the floor).

So, need a bed for guests (wife tells me, I sort of disagree, but....).

We know the mattress. Wife is totally confused about how box springs are "no more." Well, they sort of are still around, sort of like horses and buggies are still around.

Any suggestions for a WOOD bed (foundation), that will not break the bank. My daughter has the Murray Platform bed

that she loves. But she is 24 years old.

Wifey is a bit old school and not sure about the low to the ground look.

Son (28) has a bed that is sort of the same but from WalMart (south something or other brand) and it seems O.K.

But, any suggestions. We need to get this in place for Thanksgiving visitors.

Oh, and this is a budget board. And I have seen several Charles P. Rogers, etc. that are several $$$.

If we could keep this under $250 for a queen size ....

We bought these platform beds: https://www.wayfair.com/Reyna-Upholstered-Platform-Bed-ZIPC1763-ZIPC1763.html

I know theyre not wood like you specified but we moved into our new construction home 4 months ago and needed affordable foundations/headboards so gave these a try and love them! Our master bedroom is the Bone color in a king, and the guest room is Sandstone (it's gray) in a queen. The headboards aren't super padded but they're comfortable enough and sturdy so they don't wobble at all. Maybe the same brand makes wood ones?

While box springs don't function they way they used to, the mattress does all the work now, they are still out there, usually in 2 heights. We got the highest we could get, a few inches higher than the one we bought 20 years ago. I can't imagine it being easy to get out of a bed as low as you have pictured. I'm 59, and in good shape, but low beds and low couches aren't as easy to get out of.

To be honest get a cheap box spring (I think ours was $100 bucks) and just a frame. For a guest bed that is more than enough. You can even put a bed skirt around it and I'm sure your guest won't care. Every single guest bed I have slept in is like that. Heck even my bed is just a box spring on a frame the only difference is we have a head board which I don't see as necessary for a guest bed.

I wouldn't get a low bed for guest. Older people have a hard time getting out of those. I personally do think you need a bed for a guest bedroom. The box spring it is not that important since it shouldn't show.

I agree, I don't like the low ones and I can get out of them okay but a lot of people can't. We rented a house for a dental convention and one of the beds were low like that and no one wanted that room!

IMG_0399.JPG I guess it would depend on how DIY you are, but here is what I did with a church pew and $100 to the person who cut out the seat and reinforced the sides for me. We cut the pew seat out for the width (+ 2") of the queen mattress, leaving two equal "side tables" on the ends.

I love it. I didn't refinish or anything. I was lucky enough to have the pew given to me, but they aren't very expensive around here.

I use a box spring and mattress on a regular metal frame.

Well box springs, on the advice of oldbedguy.com are out:

Coil Box springs are only suited for use under a two-sided old-fashioned reversible innerspring mattress, or a solid or layered latex foam mattress without internal springs. If you put a one-sided, no flip innerspring mattress on an old-fashioned coil box spring the mattress will wear out very prematurely. And you will lose much of the comfort that the mattress could have delivered if used on a foundation.

Still looking at other options to bring the bed up in height. Love the church pew, by the way.

Thanks. I saw it on pinterest and thought "I can do that!," and I did.

What a super cute idea! Perfect for those of us who always need a place for our book and glasses!

We still use a box spring. Until last year, we were using cheap metal frames (2, twin size), until we upgraded to our current, massive bed with cabinets on either side. It was custom made and not cheap. But, after 28 years of marriage, it was a "now or never" scenario. Plus, last year we moved to a house with a massive master suite that needed something a little nicer than our shabby post-college bed. It's rare for me to splurge, even rarer to splurge on myself.

Well I still have a box spring on a basic metal frame so I guess I'm not of any use. I do have ikea dressers and I would honestly say that if you put things together right the first time ikea items can last. My SIL has an ikea dresser she has had for over 10 years and its still going strong and some items are pine which means they are all wood. even fancy stores like west elm sell particle board these days.
