We've become *that* family

Yeah, those comments...coming from people who go to the river or beach every stinkin' year...but heaven forbid you go to Disney every year....geez.

I think it's just because some people don't really LIKE Disney. They take kids b/c they feel like it's a rite of passage (especially in the South where everyone is a days drive) but they really would prefer camping or getting a beach/lake house.

Most of us would not like to go spend a week on the beach for a week, but we aren't asking them the reciprocal question of "the beach again?"

I also wonder if some of it stems from a misconception of cost. I've noticed that the once in a lifetime trips seem to cost 6-10 grand depending who I talk to. Some people seem to think everyone is spending $10,000 every time they go. So it sometimes comes off as a jealousy thing to have the means to do an "extravagant" vacation so often.

Oh I completely agree. And just so you know, I wasn't painting a river/lake/beach vacation as something negative, either. I go often. But I certainly never say to someone..."going to the beach AGAIN? didn't you just go?".

Oh I didn't think you were. NO Vacation is negative; so I can't imagine criticizing my friends for their choice of vacation. I have friends who like to "backpack" through national parks. DO you know where they sleep? In tents that they carry on their backs.... That sounds like actual torture to me, but I can't imagine saying something negative to them just because they have different interests.

Haha, the funny thing is, it came from my MIL who goes to Florida every winter ;) Just not Disney.i

We are certainly that family! We went to WDW in March and last night at Mother's day dinner my mom turned to me and said, "I want to go back." My wife and I are going for 9 nights in October, and honestly, I want more! My in-laws spent a day at Epcot while driving from NH to Fort Myers for vacation this april. We are all that family, and I wouldn't have it any other way!

I think we are on the verge of becoming that family lol! My boyfriend and I took our first trip together last September, and we are going again this September. Annnnd we are talking about possibly doing a Disney honeymoon eventually! I couldn't be more excited to be that family! :):)

I'm really liking this post. I feel so not alone. My husband and I are always amazed by all the people who feel free to tell us how much they don't like our Disney plans as if we'd asked their opinion, which we never do. And what bugs us even more is that we're pretty sure most of them would be quite upset if we ever told them what we think of their vacation plans.

I'm very proud to say that my family has also become "that" family. We are hooked on the rides, character meet and greets, atmosphere, food and of course the magic! Once a year is just not enough for us! I love filming our Disney trips and posting them on youtube to share with everyone and maybe excite them to take a Disney trip of their own!

Wait till you start going yearly.

We have officially made it an annual trip, which makes enjoying it well...all the more enjoyable, as we don't have the pressure to fit it all in (even though that's impossible, we always try). After looking back and realizing we have gone every 18 months the last 5 years, each one not knowing we were doing the next, we finally just went ahead and admitted (and planned) that we might as well assume we will start going annually. We went to our first deluxe resort in October, I'm going in next week for a girls' trip and we have another big trip planned for sometime in 2017, as well as the annual girls' trip at some point again. My goal is that when my DH and I are "empty nesters" we will become pass holders and/or DVC Memebers with max time! We have become "that family"

I've learned in our 17 years of vacations at WDW, that there are always ways to come back to those type of statements. People know better than to come at me with that now, lol. It started with one trip per year and quickly escalated to us being annual pass holders. My girls have been almost 30 times since then. We have even taken trips a month apart (June and July), from Virginia.

But I must say, we have also vacationed at many other places and have made a conscious decision to show our girls some of the best America has to offer. From Alaska to LA (and DLR) to Chicago and Key West and a bunch of stuff in between.

Can you enlighten me on your responses? I'm kind of new at being "that family" and I find that I really want to slap people, but then I just say "Have a Disney Day" instead and they get even more annoyed....I am almost 40 and don't really care if I'm a Disney Geek. I have a right to like what I like, but I would however like some good come-backs...haha

A. men.

We are that family, but in a REALLY different way. My family consists of me, DH DK1, DK2---these three tolerate Disney, my kids haven't got the bug yet, but they will...it will click. It clicked with my husband on our last trip, but he hasn't fully embraced it yet haha. He is learning to enjoy his own aspect of it, which is in the dining and resorts we stay at. HOWEVER, my family also consists of my mom and step mom, who have been brought together over the love of WDW. I mean, what other family has exes and 2nd wives travel together and truly love each other! It is the most awesome thing, because I am very close to both my biological mom as well as my step mom and now I have them all to myself, without being torn at WDW!!! We are actually taking a girls trip next week and I am SOOO EXCITED because I literally live at WDW mentally and everything I do revolves around planning and researching and talking about it. The struggle is real in the real world, as people make it very clear they are not on my level with Disney. I am so grateful to have found some other yahoos that I can fully immerse in Disney with and they have the same feeling. We are "that family" So annoying, but don't care.

It depends on who I'm talking to really. If I know they enjoy certain hobbies or gadgets etc, I bring that up. For instance I have had people make comments about the cost, insinuating that I'm spending too much money going on vacations. I always say, "We don't have a boat, camper, place at the lake, atv, don't hunt, fish, scrapbook, play golf, belong to a country club, or anything like that. Traveling is our hobby." I have said that we live like paupers at home so we can travel. Not entirely true but we are more careful about what we spend than most.

For the yearly beachgoers I say that my kids like the beach for about two days and then they are ready to leave. They like to do things on vacation. Not lay on the beach or swim.

My SIL and BIL always spend their one week a year at the same beach. She never gets in the ocean and they go to Walmart every day while there. He has made comments over the years about our vacation choices. They have gone on one WDW trip with us and he obviously did not enjoy it. He felt it was too expensive. I just let them know that we feel the magic and are willing to pay for it. I like that when I am there everything is nice. It looks pretty, clean, landscaped. I don't have to pass by cheap t shirt shops and 7-11s (unless I want to). I am immersed.

Ahh my husband and I just had this conversation today. Why do people ask us our hobbies? We spend our money on vacation and entertainment activities not on hobbies. Somehow I don't think "Going to Disney" is quite the answer people are looking for.

I love reading all these posts!!!
Makes us all feel like family!! :grouphug:
I did the beach thing a couple times.... lasted about 2 days before I was bored and wishing we had spent the money for WDW instead! Also tried the Vegas thing.... OMG!!! never again!! Can't understand why anyone would want to sit in a dark room and do nothing but gamble.... then see some crazy outrageously over-priced shows. Much rather sit and soak up the sun watching characters or the parade at WDW!!!! :thumbsup2 Now it's a must to go to WDW in spring for Flower and Garden and in fall for Food and Wine!!! Then try to fit in a 3rd trip somewhere.... and if I'm lucky ... a 4th trip!!! :goodvibes
