Westjet Prices Dropping

Back in August I booked a family trip to WDW for the end of January. Of course, since then the loonie has collapsed and my biggest fear has been that our direct Halifax to Orlando flight would be scrapped due to lack of demand. I keep checking the flight and what I see is a lower price every time. At the moment, leaving on Jan. 29 costs $215 and return a week later $166. That is $381 return, which is amazing. So there is a flip side to the loonie slide. Of course, I encourage all to take advantage of this, as I have a recurring nightmare of connecting in Pearson with small kids, a scenario which makes a crowded day at MK a "walk in the park".

So this made me go to look up flights, then I got sidetracked watching their Christmas Miracles videos...and of course now I'm teary eyed! LOL

With crude oil prices falling.... airlines are saving big money on jet fuel. Long term outlook is a surplus in oil.... thus likely why airline prices will continue to fall.

Then again... airlines are now making profits on luggage weight surcharges.

Yes, but we are talking supply and demand here. When seats are not being sold the price drops. In this case it is due to the falling loonie. CBC reported yesterday that direct flights from VCR to LAX were being cancelled by one of the airlines. Obviously, the price drop reaches a point where the airline says they are not making enough money so they scrap the flights. The irritating thing is that you buy a non-refundable direct flight and have to live with it while the airline has the right to cancel, re-route or do what they want. Psssenger's rights are still in an embyonic stage and have a long way to go. A good example is the flight that sat on the tarmac in Calgary for 8 hours yesterday. Then again, this is a Disney board so we have perhaps digressed too much.

Right now there are some great deals to be had on Westjet - but when I spoke to the Westjet representative it was more of a boxing day thing going on right now. I do agree that flights may get merged if there are not enough people on two flights going the same direct route on a given day, but that is just simple business sense.

Still clearly there break even point is pretty low if you look at some of their sales right now!!

I never seem to be able to find the fantastic deals from Toronto that others are able to snag. I just compared Westjet's April fares with the ones we booked with Jetblue. Unless we want to fly home at 6:55 am (ugh, no thanks!) we'd be looking at $520 pp return with Westjet....and that's not including any baggage or seat selection fees. We booked Jetblue out of Buffalo for $318, and that includes a checked bag each and seat selection fees. Even at current exchange rates, we're coming out ahead (and flight times are preferable, too).

Our October dates for Westjet are currently sitting at $609 :scared1: pp round trip, plus baggage/etc. And again, the times are less than ideal......that 6:55 am flight home would mean we'd need to be at the airport by 3:55 in the morning :faint: .

Me either Gina! I haven't found great deals that's others have. I will keep looking.
When are you posting your latest trip report? I'm sure you had a wonderful time and I can't wait to read all about your "adventures".

Happy New Year!!!:flower1:

I hope to have the first entry up today....watch for it over on the Orlando Hotels & Transportation board! :goodvibes

Happy new year to you as well! :wizard:

I got our return from Orlando to Van for $295. Direct. Van to Edmonton to Orlando was pricer. But I got us (family of 4) all in for $3200. Which to fly all the way across N America I am happy with. I pay more to fly West Jet and Air Canada because I am a TERRIBLE flier. I have a huge fear of flying and if I can go direct from Van with no teeny tiny planes or long layovers I do better.

We just booked with westjet as well because the prices went down this week! We are flying from Halifax, via Toronto. In fact, we are able to go down a day earlier, and with the cost of hotel its the same price as the ticket price for the day we had planned to fly on. And, if the price drops, westjet has a price drop guarantee!

I received my price drop guarantee from WJ a few weeks back for tickets over March Break. I checked again and they went down another $100, so I sent in a second request but haven't heard back yet. I wonder if you only get one kick at the can with regards to their price drop guarantee.
