We called a number from an ad for a hotel room in Downtown Disney area and was talked into a suite at Westgate Lakes if we attend a presentation. Was this a mistake?

The Westgate salespeople are the biggest sharks there are. They will tell you your presentation will take 90 minutes and then try to keep you for 3 or more hours. USA Today just did an article on Westgate today ... here's a link:
USA Today's on Timeshares

The key to surviving a timeshare presentation is to keep the thing moving. Try not to get sidetracked and keep an eye on your watch. Let the salesperson know in advance that you were told the presentation would only take 90 minutes and that they need to get everything in during that time. Try not to ask questions as they will bog you down. Tell the salesperson 'no' and 'no and 'no' again. They will take advantage of you if you are "nice". Be polite, but persistant. Eventually they will let you go :).

Lastly, if you actually feel like buying, resist! You can get a better deal on a resale. Check out www.tug2.net for more information about timeshares.

We had the worst experience when we stayed there and had to go thru the presentation. The first salesperson would not take "no" for an answer, so she calls in her "boss". I am suprised he didn't have a baseball bat with him! He really tried to be that imtimidating! When we told him we wanted to look into the timeshares at Disney as well, he actually got angry! He said, "I don't care where you buy, but don't you buy from that stingy rat!"
He of course was referring to my beloved Mickey! After that comment, we just got up and walked away.(after 3 hours of being tortured!) The rest of our time there, we were treated like ****! Do not go there! I am sure there are other time shares you can go to for a good deal and not have to put up with that! E-mail me if you want any other info!

We have attended presentations at the Vistana, Orange Lake, Marriot in Williamsburg VA and Massanutten in VA and were never treated as badly as people seem to have been at Westgate. There are so many nice timeshares in Orlando. If its not too late, consider doing a search on these boards and finding somewhere else to stay. Vistana and Orange Lake were both great, Vistana was a litle closer.

p.s. My parents honeymooned at the Nevele in the Catskills and that's where I met my DH! :)

I have never been to the Westgate presentation, but I have been to a number of presentations with various companies. One thing that helps is to put a calculator on the table, and then "do the math" as the salesperson is talking. Also, find out what resales cost. As mentioned above, you can try the TUG website to find out what you can get a resale for. I have found that if you challenge the numbers they are throwing at you, the salespeople won't be so pushy. I also mention that I have stayed at my family's timeshare, and that I know how trading works, how nice the resorts are, etc. This usually throws off the salesman's pattern for his speech, and he'll get the whole thing overwith quicker.

I think with all the other deals out there, I'm changing my plans. Thank you all for being so honest!
