On the 7-day Eastern, our DD gets her hair braided in St. Thomas for $1. Found a nice clean place.
This will be our first Western cruise (10/26) and need a recommendation for a similar ($1/braid) place. Do you have any recommendations?

Thank you!!

Where in St. Thomas did your DD get her hair braided for $1/braid? We are headed there in 2 weeks, and both of our daughters are already talking about it. Do you remember if she got a full braid, or just the top half?

Last year when we were in Cozumel, our daughters got their hair braided in the central market area. They ended up with 14 braids for $15, but only got the top half braided, when my older daughter thought she was going to get the whole length braided. Sorry, but I don't remember the name of the place.

Sure, in St. Thomas on the edge of the Downtown Area there is a market area with little booths and stuff. Sorry, don't remember the name. I do remember there was a busy intersection there, and it was a short walk down the waterfront to where the Tender picked up.

If I remember the name I'll post it.

My daughter got her whole head done...seems like for $50.

Thanks!!

Anyone else have any hair-braiding location suggestions for the Western? Thanks!

In Cozumel, the very first hair braider as you walk into town. She did DD's hair last week and did a great job. When you say $1.00, I assume you mean per inch, or per braid?? DD got her whole head done for 30 bucks, and she's got tons of long flowing blonde hair... They CAN be haggled with you know!

They originally wanted 55 bucks and I told them to go fry ice. We got it to 30 and I felt that was fair. She looks great! :)

I suggest you do it on the way BACK to the ship, so they know you have price-shopped and you have some info. Whatever price they tell you, figure what 55-60 percent of that is and throw it out as an offer. They'll take it. :)

ENJOY!!!!

We got our DD's hair braided in St. Thomas also on our first cruise, in the main part of town...on our next cruise in June 2003 we are going to try something different...I'm taking her to my local hair dresser and we have a guy there that does brading. I am going to have her hair done the same way she did in St. Thomas (the headband style) a few days BEFORE we go this time...this will free up our time on our trip and she will be all ready to go with her "tropical do" when we arrive in Florida!!!

Beano's price sounds good to me. We had two girls on the Western last week and they got their hair done. 1 had her whole head done for $30 and the other girl had her hair braided halfway back and hers was only $15. Remember to haggle. You might be able to do better than even the master haggler and I.

DD had her hair braided on Eastern Magic at Castaway Cay. I told them I wanted 10 braids and that's what we got. Not sure what we'll do on Western. DD is asking for a hairwrap but I'm sure once we're on the ship she'll want braids again.

Did I read an earlier thread that you can also have it done on the ship now? I have heard some say it can be painful. Is it just recommended for the older girls? We have a 3 and 4 yo DGD. They seem to have very sensitive scalps, but a couple braids would be so cute...if it doesn't hurt...would not be worth any tears :(

I can't speak for others, but I know when my DD had her hair braided last summer (she was 9 then), she said it hurt alot! We sat there for 45 minutes while her hair was braided in downtown St. Thomas, and when they finished and we got up and walked away, I saw the tears in her eyes...she said her heard hurt so bad she wanted the braids out!!! Yikes!! Here I just spent this $$ and she was in pain...I asked her if she thought she could wait alittle while, we were on our way to Coki Beach. She said she could, and when we got to the beach and she went swimming, she said it didn't hurt as bad..apparently the water loosed them a bit and relieved some of the pain! After that, she was fine with them, we kept them in for 4 weeks! Just remember to apply sunscreen between the braids...their little scalps will burn very quickly. I used Q-tips to apply lotion between them. I would though, be prepared for at lease SOME "discomfort" during the process.
