I know - between Grand Cayman and Cozumel the answer is "farther than you can swim."

But for the run from Port Canaveral to Key West, how far off the coast does the ship sail? For my scheduled cruise the sun will set almost than four hours after our scheduled departure and the sun will rise over five hours before we make port, so I am wondering what view I might have of the Florida Coast.

Thanks!

Our Thursday navigator from the Feb Western listed the following info:

Havana, Cuba 2 pm 25 nautical miles, Starboard side
Key West 5 pm 50 nautical miles, Port side

Cuba was essentially grey foothills in the distance both on Monday and Thursday. I did not see Key West on Thursday, but then I also wasn't looking for it.

In both Western cruises, on the at-sea days I don't remember seeing any land other than Cuba.

Thank you, Elizabeth, but I was referring to Saturday night / Sunday morning. Will we be cruising down the coast or will be be far enough out to sea to not enjoy twinkling city lights at night and the Keys reefs in the morning?

When we took our Western in Oct, I remember going out on deck 4 about 2 P.M. after Rockin Bar D closed. I looked out and saw what I thought Ft. Larderdale. So I went up to deck five to the GPS screen that they have there and I was right. So i knew that the Lights of Miami were not to far off in the distance. About 30 Min later we were passing Miami. We got passed by like three other cruise ships going to either of the ports. It was cool.

I didn't know about a GPS screen on deck 5! Where on deck 5 is it located? This is new since our last cruise.

Can I ask a stupid question here?

Why the heck does it take so long to get into port at Key West????

As you said, I am sure several ships left the Magic in their wake. The captain must have it on low and slow.

Am I being dense and it's actually a long haul or is it purposefully SLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW?

By the way, the original question is a cool one - I am glad you asked it. I will likely be up early - probably not late - and can't wait to watch to see what I can see.
