I'm glad he was sentenced to death. If he was sentenced to Life in Prison WITHOUT PAROLE, think about all the money it would cost taxpayers. Why should we pay to keep him alive?

A tragedy for the Van Daam family, and a tragedy for the family of David Westerfield, to think that a member of their family could be capable of such horror. So many innocents victims in these cases. He(Westerfield himself) is not among the innocent.

MOM,it has been clearly shown that the legal costs incurred by the lengthy appeal process are GREATER than the cost of lifetime incarceration in these cases.

Hey, the last debate here in which I was involved, regarding Bush and Iraq, was "turfed" to the Debate Board. I've learned that the moderators/Webmasters just don't countenance tooooooooooo much disagreement on the CB. After all, we're a "Community" which should be wrapped in PIXIE DUST and gaiety .

While part of me says he should be put to death, it will be no where near a horrifying (I am speculating) that what the little girl probably went through. Part of me knows as Eros has said, that it costs much more to sentence someone to death than life in prison with out possibility of parole. He gets plenty of appeals, and the state has to defend him and put the case on (if he has a public defender, I don't know for sure). And then there is part of me that wants to see him in prison for life, but with some very extreme punishmnets to go along with the 3 meals a day he gets. Perhaps hving a flock of birds pecking on him at various times, or maybe being woken up hourly with a stun gun for a few weeks, etc.

This is a very difficult thing, with no easy answer. I trueky respect all the differences of opinions here, and just because someone types in very large fonts, it doesn't make them and worse than those of us who don't .

Whether sentenced to life or death, would the same appeal process not be followed? I believe the cost would be far greater to keep him alive in prison with shelter, food, medical care, free education, and all the other perks that those lifers can enjoy while still living and breathing in a cell.

And you know, even if it cost me more as a taxpayer, I would feel the money well worth it to see the man dead as punishment for his crime against that innocent child. Perhaps it may even deter one other sicko in this world from pusuing the same gruesome crime... Money very well spent IMHO.
