We had a horrible, horrible accident near here on Friday, 4 teenagers, cheerleaders on their way home from a football game/birthday party (at McDonalds, so no alcohol involved) - in bad weather, collided with a car, the 4 girls were killed, as well as a grandmother in the car, and the unborn (mom was 32 weeks pregnant) baby of a passenger in the car.

So the Westboro group plans to protest. How much more horrible can they be? At least they decided against their original plan of protesting at the funerals, and now plan to protest at the high school the girls attended. A local pastor said it best, he said just because your name is xxx Baptist Church doesn't mean you are a Baptist and doesn't mean you are a church.

from the article:

SCOTT COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- As a community mourns the loss of the four young cheerleaders, and a grandmother and unborn baby in the second car, Westboro Baptist Church, known for protesting soldiers' funerals, claims it will show up in Scott County to picket.

With one teenager buried Wednesday, and another lying in the funeral home, people here say they're disgusted to hear that a group would take advantage of this tragedy to make a political statement.

Flags fly at half-staff, and you can't drive far in Scott Co. without seeing ribbons, in memory of those who died.

As everyone here stands united in their time of suffering, news that a group may use this event to protest is very upsetting.

Resident Amanda Ward says, "I just don't think it's right. If something happened to one of them, they would want the same kind of respect shown."

Resident Ronnie Brock says, "Well, I'd say they don't need any extra grief at all with the tragedy that's happened. I'm sure the families have been through a lot and they'd just like a little bit of peace."

The group that plans to protest is from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan. Their news release says "God Hates Tennessee" and says the cheerleaders "died for Tennessee's sins."
The group that's known for strong anti-homosexual views told us by phone they now plan to protest at the high school, rather than at the funerals.

Church spokesperson Shirley Phelps says, "To help you connect the dots from your rebellion against God, your idols, your false gods, your filthy manner of life, teaching your children that God is a liar and rebellion against His standards."

Wherever they choose, the protesters will not be welcome.

Scott Appalachian Industries Executive Director Scott Appalachian Industries "You know, what goes around comes around, and people ought to just be careful."

The sign in front of Scott Appalachian Industries is just one of many indications of his support for the victims' families.

West says, "I don't know that I would want to find people in their lowest time of despair and try to make misery even worse."

There's another sign of support outside Pizza Plus. Owner David Daugherty put it there. He says the thought of protestors here is more than he can stand.

Daugherty says, "I can't believe something like this would happen, but you've got those people out there that would do stuff like this."

Sheriff Anthony Lay refused to go on camera, saying he doesn't want to do anything to give publicity to a group like this, but he says the Scott County Sheriff's Department will provide security and make sure there are no disruptions at any funerals.

I know I'm being very politically incorrect, but I think it's high time these idiots are treated to a good whoopin'. A group blanket party comes to mind.

I've had several "encounters" with this group. They are perhaps the most hateful people I've ever encountered, and I've seen nearly every protest in DC in the past 5 years.

That said, they are nothing more than an inbred family that spouts hate and lives off of publicity. They usually back down when they find out they will face counterprotestors.

Is anyone else just biding their time so everyone else can go protest at one of THEIR loved ones funeral, stating that God hates Bigots?

That group is the American equivalent of the Taliban. There should be a special circle in Hell reserved for these members of Westboro Baptist Church.

These people disgust me. They are not filled with the love of God, they are full of nothing more then vile hate.

I hope thousands of people show up at their funerals and make their lives miserable.

Any word on if the motorcylce guys will be showing up to help protect the family and mourners from these sick twisted evil people?

Oh, I'm quite sure there is.

OP, A lot of times the Westboro group is all talk. Half the time, they don't follow through with their "threats".
I have to tell you that if I thought even for a second that they would be here in my area for a funeral, I would have myself and as many people as I could muster up, and we'd be right there in front of them to shield the family from their hate.

I wonder what causes people to be so filled with hate? These people are pathetic and give the human race a bad name.

I am so disgusted, if I had the time and money I would fly down myself and stand right up to these sorry excuse for human beings and tell them where to go.

This is not sad, this is sick and these people think they are going to heaven with such hate in their hearts - give me a break.

I would ask God to pray for them since they need help alot more than I do.

Those families and community do not need any more pain, I hope they don't show up and especially at the highschool that is just totally uncalled for.

They came to our town when a priest announced he was gay. Morons

You have to ask the Patriot Guard Riders to be there. A family member must contact them, they won't come just because they hear about, they must be invited. Not only would I invite them, I would set up a phone chain of some local dads. Have these dads on standby for if this "church" shows up. The dads only have to do what the PGR do, and that's build a human wall to shield family and fellow classmates from seeing them. The key also is to not speak to or acknowledge them in any way. Pretend they don't exist. Keep your backs to them.
Best of luck!

I'm confused ... what are they protesting? Against cheerleading? against car accidents? huh? :confused3

Church spokesperson Shirley Phelps says, "To help you connect the dots from your rebellion against God, your idols, your false gods, your filthy manner of life, teaching your children that God is a liar and rebellion against His standards."

I don't see how this accident even remotely connects with this statement!

Wohoooo!  I'm all for it! When's the party?

It's going to be so hard I know but your community needs to ignore them. More than likely there will not be very many of them, usually no more than 10 people. There will be ugly signs and it will be shocking that they have little children out there spreading hate.

DO NOT HAVE A COUNTER DEMONSTRATION

I know people mean well trying to go down and protest against the hate and ugly or whatever but all it does is take away from what people should be focusing on and that is the lives and loss of four beauitful girls and the families devastated. This group will try to turn the memorial services into media circus.

I guess they are stopping by here also from what I've heard. They like to be a "welcoming party" when the soldiers are coming home. It freaks out the parents of soliders that are coming for the homecomings and makes me sick that when the soldier leaves out the maingate after flying in that they can see the ugly crap. We aren't counter demonstrating and we've asked for the Patriot Guard not to be there. We want all focus on the soldiers and families. That doesn't mean I'm not tempted to drive by with a super soaker and give them a "friendly" welcome to town.

They are now "protesting" ANY emotionally-charged funerals, claiming that these tragedies are God's punishment for this country's tolerance for homosexuality.

DON'T DO IT!!!

That's exactly what they are looking for. They WANT to provoke you, and then they will turn around and haul you to court (they are actually lawyers) and claim infringement of their First Amendment rights.

They crave attention. Don't give it to them.

This "church" gives all Christians a bad name. They disgust me. But in the end they will have to face the judgement seat and pay for their intolerance and lack of showing the love of Christ.

Idiots.
