West Coast Road Trip suggestions

Not sure if Im posting this in the forum. I am wanting to plan a trip next summer to take my family of 4 from Illinois to California and stop at as many sites as possible. We are also taking another 2 adults and their 2 kids with us. We cant decide on renting a RV and driving out there and back (really expensive) or Flying to California and renting a RV out there and driving back to have more time to see more. Has anyone done something like this and have some suggestions? RV rentals for one way are pretty scarce and even the ones I do find are about $240 per day with only 100 miles allowed per day which will exceed greatly.

I would fly into San Diego and rent the RV there. Then travel up to San Francisco and turn in the RV and fly home. There are many, many great places to stop between the two cities.

I would rent a van & stay in hotels. The gas savings will pay for the room. Plus RV's don't really lend themselves well to sight-seeing on a time constraint. And you could easily kill 3-4 weeks driving from CA to IL if you want to see a lot.
