Were you ever sick at Disney?

Our first night of our first trip ever to WDW, DS 3 tripped and fell outside Chef Mickey's and busted his lip open. :sad2: It bled like crazy. It was really frightening. A paramedic on his way to dinner stopped to help, the DVC sales person came to help, a passing EMT stopped to help, the CR Hotel Manager appeared, and then the resort Paramedics appeared. It was quite a commotion. We ended up taking him to an pediatric emergency clinic where he got two stitches in his lip. I know, I know, this post was about getting sick, but come to find out he had an ear infection to boot. Poor kid! He had no symptoms of it, did not complain, and I felt like a bad mommy because I had no idea. :confused3 We got some some antibiotics and just took it easy for the next couple of days. After that, he was fine and we thoroughly enjoyed the rest of our trip.:thumbsup2

I got stomach flu the second to the last day I was there this past August. So instead of going to Epcot and Broadwalk that night - I spent the time in my room.

It is so nasty to be sick there and know beyond your drawn curtains lies fun.

Lucky for me I had enough time to stablize before leaving the next evening. I was frighten that I wouldn't make my plane or even worse - having to go to the Celebration hospital.

I've heard you can get a doctor's referral service to come to your resort and Turner Drugs does do deliveries. Both are expensive but it may help to salvage the rest of your trip if it happens early.

I'm hoping everyone is able to go healthy - be there healthy and return home healthy (and so happy!)

My brother-in-law and his wife's 2 daughters were sick during their trip with us to WDW last year. They had to stay in the hotel (Grand Floridan) for the final 4 days of the trip whilst my husband, daughter and I went to all the parks. Poor things, it was their first WDW trip too :sad1: :sad1:

I just came back from a Mother and Son trip only. Arrived last sat. all was well then on sun went to MGM it was HOT as all get out started to not feel very well grabed some cold water had something to eat, still did not feel all that great. Went back to the hotel, DS wanted to stay for a few hours. That evening we had ressies at the Garden Grill still didn't feel good but went. Let's just say I spent more time in the bathroom than our table. Mon I was OK, then on tues came down with a sore thoat, which I thought could have been from me upchucking on sun. On our last day which was tues by 1pm I had be slammed with a horriable cold. Been home sick ever since.
I felt so bad for my poor son. We only had a few good days, which is better than no days at disney. But still it isn't any fun being sick away from home.
Going to go back in Oct, but this time I told DH he is coming also.

My DH got a virus one trip, he thought at first it was just heat stroke. He was so sick, completely out of it for a couple of days, he was never really 100% while we wer at WDW. He stayed in our room, he just wanted to sleep. Fortunatly the shops have a good selection of medicines, so I was able to get him something for the fever. Oddly enough, he is just recovering from exactly the same thing, he seems to get it when he is really stressed at work, poor thing.

It felt really odd to be in the parks on my own with DS5. He was great, I thought he would be awful because Daddy wasn't there, but he was a real trooper.

August 2003 my DS got very sick on the 2nd day of our 10 day vacation. He was vomiting and had diarrhea at the same time. NOT fun! As he felt a little better, we would leave the room and go to nearest park and do what we could, otherwise we spent a lot of time in room watching TV. It was a bummer! I agree that it is difficult to be sick when you know what lies outside of your room. My son also has a hard time swimming in resort pool now because he got sick 1st time after swimming so he relates swimming to his sickness.

Also, in December 2004 my husband was sick with sinus infection before we left (got antiobiotics, etc... before leaving), but as soon as we got down there his ear swelled up BIG TIME and he couldn't even put his head on a pillow. We ended up calling the urgent care recommeded from front desk and they came to our room. They changed antibiotic and drained DH ear and we took it easy for the next couple days.

On our "late honeymoon" and our first trip to the world, i was feeling like I had a head cold, by the third day I could barely talk, and at 2 am ended up in emergency and then to an emergency root canal. Wow was it bad, ended up in the room the next day. Poly sent a complimentary soft food dinner to the room, very sweet with get well flowers.

It seems one of us is sick every year. DS has allergies and asthma and has vitisted the first aid centers in just about every park.We rented a car to go to Walgreens before learning Turner drug will deliver for $5.00 to Disney resorts and there is a physician concierge service available to examine you in room.We found this out after a trip to nasty little walk in center on I drive.
I carry all kinds of OTC meds w/us just in case. We all got quite ill first trip due to heat and dehydration. The nurses in Epcot first aide were terrific but we did lose a day.Last year I was pushed down steps at Super Soap and hurt ankle. They were pretty quick in getting me ice,ace wrap and wheelchair for evening. DS got toe broken by a stroller prior year and DD was hurt by a stroller one year. When I asled a vendor for ice I was told they can no longer give ice for injury except at first aid station because of the legal implications of providing care. That seems a bit crazy.Anyway we have found out through trial and error that instead of just trying to handle it on your own if you tell the resort they can make it a lot easier to get the care you need without too much hassle.I just wish we knew sooner about the pharmacy and house calls!

YES! When my DH and I went down there in January of 2002(our last trip to Disney) my DH and I had some kind of a stomach bug. Just nausea, not vomiting or anything else. Our 4 year old was just fine the entire trip, even though ours was only a 4 day trip that time. Luckily, we stayed at the Holiday Inn Family Suites(which now may be the Nickelodeon suites). My DS of 4 years had has Ninetendo to play, but it stinks spending all that money to go down there and not see hardly anything because you don't feel well. We have another trip planned in 42 days, so hopefully we will all be healthy! We now have 2 DS(9 and 5 now). We vowed we would never go in January again, not only because of all the sicknesses going around, but also because it was cold when we were there(in the 40's and 50's). It was not a good time! I am willing to deal with the heat in the summer instead of sickness in winter!

Of our trips to WDW, husband has gotten sick all but first time and last time so that makes at least six or seven times he has caught a bad cold or sinus infection while doing Disney.

We always blame it on the airplane recirculated air but that isn't explained by the cold he got driving down one year! I think it's due to the stress before vacation and then he finally let's himself "relax and be sick" during vacation!!!

And one trip we did visit the I-Drive Walk-In Clinic for either him or DS for something like this years ago! They were very nice but we saw several families with very sick children - ugh! Didn't stop us from touring the parks though and I just let him rest in the room and read while I tour if he is sick!

And I do get migraines but bring my meds and don't hesitate to take them at the first sign of a headache. I have never missed a minute of touring due to migraines......but the sun and heat make vigilance very important. And as I learned from an unusual migraine last summer while rafting on the Salmon River dehydration is a big contributor to so many other health problems. Please watch your water intake!

We always buy NO EXPIRATION tickets at WDW for this reason alone.

Have healthy, safe trips everyone!

On our first trip we had made reservations through AAA and had a package deal that included length of stay passes. Since the passes started on arrival day we decided to drive down a day early and stay outside the park and go first thing in the morning. My daughter woke up at 2 am in the motel the night before we were to head to CBR with a 102 fever. It was a Saturday morning on July 4th. I got up at 6am and started looking for a Doc in the box. Fortunately I found one that opened at 7:30am and was waiting for the Doc at the door when he arrived. He looked at my daughters ears and then gave her a potent antibiotic shot and me a bill for $150. We went to Walmart to fill a prescription and had to wait until 9 am for the pharmacy to open. We arrived and CBR at 10 am to find our room ready and the trip was wonderful from there on out.

My 10th anniversary was last year, our first vacation sibce our 2 day honeymoon, first time to Disney since I was like 14 yrs old(a few extra years ago-lets just say there was no epcot,Ak or MGM then) just before we were about to go, i had a surpirse inspection for my business..can anyone say 'stress", then my darn " monthly friend' started and by the time I got to Disney i was sick with a cold. All i wanted to do was sleep. I dragged myself each day to the parks and such, but kept dreaming of that hotel bed! I am sure i was not an enjoyable family member at that point. Took 4 days to get better, but when i finally did i was able to outwalk and set a good pace that others had to keep up :moped:

Going again this year, better NOT be sick!
BTW that was the only time I was sick all year last year!

I had a string of about six years where I was always sick on my first day on vacation. This included my kids first trip to Disney. On our first day, we did the Winnie the Pooh character breakfast at Crystal Palace. The food looked really tempting as I do love to eat but I couldn't really eat anything. I put on a strong fake face and acted like I was having a good time because Pooh was my DD's favorite character. Afterwards, we got out into the park. It was rough going for the first couple of hours and then my stomach calmed down and I started feeling better. So at the end of the day, we had a really good time.

LOL Someone *always* gets sick on our trips. Be it double ear infections (found before the trip), DH's nasty bout of food poisioning last trip (the walls at the All Stars really are thin :sad2: ) DD's 24 hr tummy bug (same trip 3 days earlier). I'm a chronic overpacker, so I generally have just about everything we could need. ;)

The ear infections never slowed us down, DH's food poisioning was the night before we left, and DD and I tried to hit the MK that morning, but after being puked on 2 times, we headed back to the room while DH and DS played. :) I read, she slept, it was nice.

We just got back from WDW two weeks ago and DD age 8 got some bug. She threw up on the bus :sad1: and then again throughout the night. So my wife stayed with her the next day while I took my DD age 6 to AK. That night my sick DD threw up one more time but then was fine, so we had a day and a half that my daughter missed.

Boy, have people in my family gotton sick!! DD 18 months, first trip to WDW. Well we had check out of the World and into Universal. She woke up with 104 fever...YAY!! Fun times. Our DS's went with their uncle and had fun. We got her fever down before we got home, she had a virus, and it is normal for her to run very high fevers. Next trip 2001, I wake up on NYE with pink eye. Fun times. First extended family trip in Dec 2003. Bil gf, comes off the plane with a cold. Fil gets sick while there. DS2 gets sick, and then DD7 gets sick. Cancellation of lots of Princess meals. Again it was NYE, ds had fever in Epcot. Thankfully we were renting a 4 bedroom house, so we had plenty of space and a kitchen. The house was up the block from the Centra Care. That worked out well!! Last trip, Aug 2005, DS4 has asthma attack on flight down. He wouldn't suck his lolly or do anything to reduce the pressure in his ears. He kept crying and coughing. First day of trip was spent on phone to our pediatrcian and running to drug stores getting him 2 fast acting inhalers, and a steroid med. Rest of the trip was spent trying to get him to take his meds. We were so worried about flying home, but he was ok, and our landing was so gradual, that no one's ears bothered anyone.

When we travel to WDW, I have thermometer, motrin, tylenol, kids scripted meds, and a printout of all Orlando area doctors on my health plan.

Yep, in 1995 I got a UTI - on my HONEYMOON! :guilty: Poor DH! :rotfl: I was fine most of the trip because I was taking Uristat but I had some not so pleasant moments.

I missed the Family Fun Run 5K race in Jan 05 because I got sick the day before during the night. I was sick for three days. I thought it might have been food poisoning, but we couldn't confirm it. I got sick last time because I caught a bug at work right before we left. My symptoms weren't bad until we arrived. I was coughing and sneezing, all congested. My son got a terrible sunburn once, he took off before we could grease him up with sunscreen (and we forgot later on). My husband got a terrible ear infection once.

These are the reasons we know how to get to Centra Care (walk in clinic). They take BC/BS, so I only have to pay the copay.

Both DH and I got food poisoning on our last trip to WDW. It hit us late in the day and luckily the next day, we had scheduled an easy day, no parks. By the day after, we were much better. The kids still remind us about it! We still had a great trip.

had DSIL who had to get her appendix out at Celebration Hospital the 3rd day into our trip 7 years ago!!! Put a little cramp into the vacation.
