Were you ever paddled in school?

In first grade...never forgot to due my homework again;)

In first grade...never forgot to due my homework again;)

That's why I was paddled in 2nd grade! But it truly wasn't my fault. I'd been called to the office for a hearing test or something like that and I missed the in-class work we did. The next day when we went over it, I didn't have it done. The teacher said that if I didn't have the next page done (DUH!), I'd get paddled.

She took me over to the 1st grade class and did it in front of them to make an example of me. :scared:

I wasn't but I remember a boy in my class getting hit by one of the Nuns. Her name was Sister Cantius, but we used to call her Sister Cassius Clay!!

No but I saw several classmates get the "Board of Correction" over the years.

Never was paddled at school. However, I do remember a teacher pulling my hair. She sent me to the blackboard to solve a math problem and I just froze. I couldn't come up with the answer, in addition to all the snickering going on behind my back. Talk about humiliation. Math never was my best subject. She was a :maleficen

Yes, Went to a Catholic Grade School on Long Island NY. Weapons of Choice were ( Paddle rating shows the level of pain)

Chalkboard Erasers - Used to get ones attention with a shot to the head; Rating 1 Paddle

Wood Pointer - 3/4 Inch Diameter with Rubber tip at the end, Used to whack the rear of an offender - 3 Paddles

12" Wood Ruler - Used to strike offenders palms, don't pull back otherwise next strike would be harder. - 2 Paddles

Collar Grab -- Grabbed by the back of the Collar and dragged in to classroom or area of discipline. Sometimes a frontal grab was achieved by the tie. Didn't work well with a clip on. The frontal approach was used for verbal abuse with the term "Mister" - 1/2 of Paddle

Bessy -- Bessy was a wooden paddle about 1" Thick that was used by Ms. Salvatore 5th grade teacher. Used Quickly based upon mode. 4 Paddle

Hand Slap with Diamond Engagement Ring turned inward -- Hurt like Heck and would leave a mark. Used by lay teacher. Adapted by the nuns with slaps for each syllable. Do not ever to that again you bad bad bad boy = 11 Smacks. 4 Paddles

Grab and Turn -- Grab and Turn was used by our special friend Mrs Savatore. She would grab a good chunk of hair and make you spin on the floor until the hair ripped from your head. 6 Paddles

There was one nun, who was a dwarf. She was called Mighty Midget. When you were older she would have to stand on a chair to smack you. You had to stand and wait while she got the chair.

If any of them are still alive they should be taken out and shot. I pleased to say that Ms Salvatore dropped dead of a heart attack in the classroom.

Grammar School was a torture chamber. There were some very good and nice teachers there, but there were some real nuts that were the most abusive people I have ever met.

OMG! Talk about barbaric! :scared1:

I had to :rotfl: at the sentence that I bolded. :lmao: :lmao:

I was paddle once in the first grade. I had accidently (yes, it really was an accident) spit some water out of my mouth and onto the floor. So my teacher's "solution" was to take me in front of the other first grade class and paddle me.

I still remember how humiliating that was. My mom almost killed everyone at the school.

Grade 7. The offense? Reading a book during science class - had it hidden partially in my desk and didn't see the teacher come up behind me. I'd already been warned about it before. Still love to read. Still not very fond of science.

Not at my Catholic school (Girls only) but the Catholic school (boys only) my brothers went to even had a name for the big leather strap they were all hit with. It was called "The Gat".
The Elementary school and high school they went to was run by the Christian Brothers...but their title was an oxymoron as they would beat the boys, slam them against walls, and throw boys out windows.
And to think parents actually paid private school fees for this and this was considered okay and acceptable in the day.
The Diocese went Bankrupt in the 90's from all the lawsuits of physical and sexual abuse from the Brothers and the Priests.
:sad2:

I was paddled several times:

2nd grade- being rowdy in line
3rd grade- running in the classroom
5th grade- passing notes in class, talking
8th grade- I refused to participate in a game of dodge ball

I never got the paddle, but at the elementary school my siblings and I went to my mom was an aide. On more than one occasion she escorted my brothers down to the office to get paddled. Afterwards, they got to sign the paddle.

Yeah, my brothers went to a jr. high and high school run by the unchristian brothers. They have actual scars on their backs from some of the brothers.

Yes in middle school. My own mother said the assistant principal could because I would be unable to serve my detentions because she would not take me. Barbaric!!! To let an adult male swat a 90lb girl!

Back in the early to mid 1970's, I was paddled a few times in grade school and I have to say I deserved it. I did some truly stupid things and I'll leave it at that. No girls were paddled though and it was just the boys who received the "board of correction" as I saw another poster call it

I'm not saying it was the right thing to do, nor am I endorsing it as a cure all for what's going on today. I can still remember the principal having the paddle hang on the wall behind his desk for everyone to see and it had the word OUCH in great big letters across it. He performed the punishment in the office if it was just a single case or if the situation required it, he would go mobile with it and come to the classroom. The usual suspects would be lined up in the hallway or by the chalk board and in his words, assume the position. Those are the only words he would say and you knew what was coming next. It was a different time back then.

Nope, paddling was not allowed (even though it was Catholic school.)

However, in my sisters day (which is really only a few years before me) there was a teacher that would take off her sock and run it along the edge of the room on the floor. And she'd make the kid who got in trouble put it in their mouth! How this was allowed, I'm not sure. She'd also take a bad kid and make him get under her desk and she'd periodically kick them! Needless to say, she was no longer a teacher by the time I got there.

Yes, in the fourth grade, and it was one of the best things that could have happened to me. Up to that time, I was a real hellion because of some things that had happened to me in my youth but after the paddling I realized I was not God and that I could be held accountable for my actions. It really turned me around.

I was never paddled, but I did see kids in my school paddled (I specifically remember a couple of kids in junior high paddled). I'm 35 if that makes a difference. I was a teacher before I had my kids, and taught at the school I had gone to. Sometime between when I went there and then taught there they must have changed the policy, because when I taught there paddling was not allowed.

Yep, got my first school paddling my freshman year. Was tardy too many times in a six week period. The guy I caught a ride with that year (a senior) was late as well so we were both told to wait to see the AP. As we were arriving at school-realizing we were late, the senior told me that we'd probably have to see the AP since this was our third tardy within 6 weeks. I asked what that meant. He said for him, he'd probably have to "get swats". I got a little nervous then and said "oh, really". Once we were told to have a seat, my friend asked if I had ever had been to the AP's office. I said "no" and he tried to reassure me. He said he knew they were kinda strict with the first period tardies for early classes and that we might have any option as to the punishment, but that he would take the swats as it was quick and over and that he couldn't do detention after school.

About that time we were called in and were briefly lectured and then told we were going to be paddled. Since it was the first time for me, the AP made me watch as my friend had to empty his back pockets and bend over and get his swats. I was nervous but anxious as this was all a first for me, not only close-up witnessing, but knowing I was next.:scared: He got 5 swats since this was not his first time. I was to get 3, but since I didn't stay in position after the second one, I got an additional swat. We both had wet eyes when we left, actually I had tears, but I was able to re-compose myself fairly quickly and went to my first class. Was a little embarassed coming in late and not sure if anyone could tell I had been paddled. :sad1:

My friend and I ended up having a few laughs about it the next few days riding to school. And, I ended up getting paddled a couple more times while in high school.

I got it five times that I can recall. Three times in the 1st grade (mean first grade teacher), once in the 5th, and once in the 7th. I was scared to death of paddlings, so I never chose it over anything else. In fact, I think I would have painted the walls of the school to avoid it:)...which wasn't always a cool decision among boys in a public southern school.

I remember the last one in 7th grade...a bunch of boys were out of their seats playing "keep-away" with a girls' purse before class started. It looked tempting to me, so I joined in. Another boy jumped in front of me and caught it right before the teacher (coach) walked in and gave everyone involved the "go out in the hall" order. I thought I was o.k. since I never actually touched the purse. But, the others ratted me out and he called me out there too. They got two swats each (or "licks" as we called them). I got three because I didn't come out in the hall on my own:scared: I never got out of my seat for that kind of thing again though...and i've never been arrested for assault:) Haven't thought of that in years!!
