Were you ever paddled in school?

Yep!

They had a special "Girls" paddle and a "Boys" paddle. :rotfl: I became well acquainted with the girlie paddle. On your 3rd trip to see the principle you would get paddled. I think first trip was a talk and 2nd trip was recess (or lunch) detention, 3rd was recess (or lunch) detention and paddle. It worked in the younger grades but in 2nd grade I was just having some 'issues'. I was usually more scared of how mad my parents would be when they found out I had been to the principle.

I was in that office so often he just gave up after a while, it was mainly for talking and inappopraite comments. I remember being sent in their for lunch since I was talking in my lunch detention. Mr. Doug just threw his hands up and began to share his spaghetti with me! It became a regular 'date' for us. I would purposely want to go see the principle at lunch just to talk and share spaghetti... so then he changed it that if I behaved I could come see him and share spaghetti. What do ya know, that worked!!

You sound like Junie B. Jones. :rotfl: I got paddled my senior year in high school because a friend of mine was eating an apple in class and got caught - I was minding my own business, so not really sure how I got involved. I liked the teacher though and was not going to argue with him. After being in detention so much, i decided to take the paddle. The assistent principal did not like me very much, so she took great delight in paddling me and as a matter of fact made some snarky comment about how that was probably the first time I had ever been spanked. What a joke, my mom was queen of discipline, no kidding. She never worried about whether or not we would be mad at her, she just did what she had to do to raise us to be somewhat civilized - LOL

yes, several times.
1st gr teacher and one teacher for 5th(taught PE and science I believe), paddled for every tiny little thing.
Then in 7 & 8 there was one teacher that would paddle the entire class if 1 person acted up when we had a substitute. The last time she did it (about 1/2 through 8th grade) she bruised several kids and even paddled kids that had been absent the day with the substitute. She was told that she was not allowed to paddle again after that. She is now a principal at one of the schools (middle I believe)

Then 1X in 9th grade I was sent to the girls VP for something (can't remember what). I had choice of detention or paddling. I chose the paddling and made the mistake of laughing because it didn't hurt. Well she gave me a couple of extra licks and made certain those did hurt.

I went to a catholic school in the eighties and when I was in 2nd grade the teacher, or more like the witch who tormented us hit me in the head with a hard cover book because I was having trouble reading! Well needless to say that didn't go over well with my parents who went over to the school the next day and nearly took her head off. My mom said she thought she was gonna have a stroke from screaming at this woman. But nothing was done about this person and she was allowed to stay.

Then years later my own children started at that school and everything was fine until.....low and behold that wretched woman is still there teaching. She wasn't a classroom teacher but a music teacher so my dd only had her twice a week. I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt that maybe in her old age she had changed, well I was wrong! My dd who was also in 2nd grade at the time came home and said this horrible excuse for a teacher pulled her hair! I thought I was going to lose my mind. I said why did she do that, and my dd said because I got out of the line and she grabbed her hair and pulled her back in line with it. The next day I went to the school with my mom and I went after her with everything I had, I even threatend to call the police. I know it sounds extreme but I believe my whole outlook on school was shaped by this woman and I refused to let her do that to my daughter. I am not usually the parent that is at school complaining about every little thing, but my dd is a good girl and as quiet as a mouse and never causes problems. Two days later the school informed me she would be resigning. I felt vindicated for myself and all the other kids she hurt in her 40 years of teaching. Sorry to ramble on.

No, but I do remember other kids getting paddled in school.

My parents would have killed me if they found out I was paddled in school, LOL.

No, my school did not do that, and my parents would not have allowed it. Of course, my brothers and myself were very meek children and would not have needed a paddling.:)

As I said above, the one paddling that I received, I deserved. But I had one sadistic teacher in 3rd grade. She taught one year and was gone by popular demand.

One day she slammed me on the head with a THICK dictionary because she said I was talking. I was indeed a yakker, but this time I was innocent. And even if I had been talking, the punishment was extreme. She could have given me a head injury! I told my mother that afternoon and she was on the warpath.

She told me I could either give the teacher a message or she could go to school and tell her in person. She left it up to me. I chose to deliver the message. It was, "My mama said to tell you that if you ever hit me again, she is going to come up here and beat you with a baseball bat." :rotfl2: And anyone in our small town knew that my mother did not make idle threats. :scared: Needless to say, that demon never touched me again. And she was very nice to my mother at Open House. :lmao:

But she still abused the other kids. Except for the one whose whole family paid her a surprise visit one day right in the big middle of class.....She left that girl alone too. Funny how bullies always back down when you push back. :sad2:

Oh helllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll no! My mother would have beaten the principal to death with her bare hands, if he had!

My mom <---you just don't mess with her kids!!! :rotfl:

I went to public school and was never paddled. My older siblings (10 and 12 years older) went to a Catholic School and were paddled many times.

I did have a teacher that could whip a chalkboard eraser from across the room and hit his target almost every single time. The part that made it really fascinating was that he was extremely cross eyed. He would be looking in one direction and whip the eraser in the opposite direction; totally surprising the person. And trust me, it hurt!

Yes. In the 5th grade, for writing a note to my friend that said (and it was read aloud to the class as if it would embarrass us)...."My mom said I can come over after school." I was such a rebel. :rotfl2:

ETA: When I was in second grade and still in private school (my mom took me out BECAUSE of this) I got whacked on the knuckles with a ruler almost daily for falling asleep in our 2 hour long religion class by the nun that taught it.

Yep and DS goes to a private school where they still do! Of course there always has to be a witness and the parents are called first but I see nothing wrong with it whatsoever.

That's a sweet story!

But I have to ask, why a separate paddle for girls and boys? Did they have cooties or something?

Not as punishment, but on our birthdays. I had one teacher (and I'm actually astonished thinking about this probably for the first time as an adult) who would put us over her knees and paddle us (lightly of course) what age we were turning. This was first grade so, like 7 times. And then she would pinch us on the bottom!! It never hurt and it was all in fun; she was a really fun teacher. Thinking about this now, I can't believe it. This was in the 80s.

Oh gawd, that reminds me. In elementary school, the teachers would have all the kids stand with their legs apart and we'd have to crawl through the tunnel to get our birthday smacks. For some reason, we loved it. :rotfl:

That's must have been such a good feeling. I can't believe that teacher got away with such horrendous behavior for all those years.

I forgot about the book or eraser throwers. :rotfl2: We had our share of those too.

I wasn't, but it was definately used in my school. My dad was teh assistant principal, and he brought home one of the fiberglass paddles (with the air holes cut out!) to keep the 3 of us in line. :) Worked great.... Or at least we'll pretend it did.

Actually, I know my parents both complained about the lack of discipline once paddling was stopped. But then again, most forms of REAL punishment were stopped at the same time. No detention. My mother was told that "writing-off" was considered corporal punishment and couldn't be used becuase the child might get carpal tunnel! And you can't make the child sit out recess, because that's state mandated. Etc.

Yes, there was paddling when I was in school and kids were much better then.

No, I was never paddled.

I never did, but I sure remember when others kids did ::yes::
I knew that if I had to get paddled at school, that I would get paddled at home alot worse - so I made sure I never did anything to get paddled. :thumbsup2

When I was in public grade school, things were changing in that paddling was allowed but had to be witnessed by another adult.

I only got it once, for talking (girl here), but it was so humiliating! To get a witness my 2nd grade teacher would take the misbehaver next door to a 3rd grade classroom and do it in front of the whole class. Once was enough for me.

There were dark stories about what kind of paddle the principal, Mr. Tally had. We heard it was made of glass. :lmao:

Yep, second grade while living in Greece for a year. No a paddle but a switch. We had to go outside and and pull a branch of the bush and bring it to the teacher.

Nope-no paddling and 8 years of catholic school. There was no corporal punishment in our school-nobody got paddled, slapped or hit with a ruler.

Really? I went to elementary school in the early 70's and I haven't noticed any difference in behavior between the classes I was in and dd's classes in the 90's.

There was paddling when I was in elementary school and, no, I was never paddled. They did end corporal punishment when I was in about 5th grade.

I find it very bizarre to hear stories about high school students getting paddled. That's just so far out of my realm of experience that it really surprises me.
