We're now Nut free at Dd's school!

Pretty much all they're going to let your kids eat is water and (whole-wheat)bread. Prisoners get a more varied menu.

Oh no...I think the crackers are actually made with regular bleached flour..The kids have to live a little, right? Water and saltines all around! now that's a party!! =)

Actually, they do allow cookies for birthday celebrations (but not frosted cookies- We wouldn't want things getting too wild!)

I just pick my battles! She eats enough sugar in enough other places...and the neighbor girl who goes to the local public school just had tater tots and corn dogs for lunch. So there are two ways to look at everything!

Yeah...the glass container thing didn't work for me. We stick with Rubbermaid containers. They seem to be just as reusable.

The food ideas that everyone is offering are really good. I'll look for sunbutter and we can try it out.

I don't know of any schools here that allow peanut butter (or foods that may have come in contact w/peanuts). Even most daycares here are that way as well. My son's school also doesn't allow fish, kiwi, strawberries. Sometimes it's hard for lunch but I try. Both my kids will take cereal for lunch.

My DD has a boy in her class with a severe peanut allergy. Her school is nut-free. (or supposed to be) I am very carefull about everything I send with her. She loves peanut butter but is not allowed to have it for breakfast on a school day in case she has some residue left. When I bake something for class parties I am always careful about what I bake with and use a new container of butter or shortning in case it has come in contact with PB. I know this is kind of an inconvenience for me and her but it is life or death for her classmate. To anyone who complains about PB allergies being a hassle just think of the fear that those children's parents have to deal with EVERYDAY knowing how easy it would be for their child to die. Being a little considerate and careful on your part makes it alot less stressful for them.

My Kind. is in a peanut free class this year. My 4th grader has never had to deal with this. They all sit in the same lunch room, but they do sit with their class so I assume that they just want to make sure that the kids in close contact do not have peanut butter. Honestly it is a real pain because Drew loves peanut butter and doesn't really eat much of her sandwiches when I make them with meat, but she'll just have to deal if it means that her classmate will be safe.

Our snacks have to be in marked packages to avoid any questions. I know that the little boy in our class has some backup snacks with the teacher for the times that he can't have what is brought in. I assume that his allergy is not as serious as some because nothing has been said about bringing things that are marked that they may have peanut in them from the facility.

I am trying to see the silver lining here.......... At least I won't be up till the middle of the night making birthday cupcakes this year because the snack has to be in a store bought package. Darn!

I don't send PB&J that often so here's what I send:

-chicken nuggets (kids don't mind them cold)
-hot dogs
-lunch meat (either in a sandwich or just by itself)
-soup (They love Goldfish Tomato & Goldfish Meatball soups)
-pancakes with syrup & bacon or sausage (my kids love me to send bacon to school. The fact that its cold doesn't seem to bother them 1 bit)
-cold pizza
-mini pizzas (I use mini pita rounds I found at Kroger awhile back. I pre-cook & send them cold but I'm sure you could do a pizza lunchable type thing)

IMO, a wide-mouth thermos is a valuable lunchbox tool. I've kept everything from popcorn shrimp to soup hot in one of those.

Our school has also gone "nut free". We also have to make sure any snacks we send are packaged and have an ingredient list. We are also now not allowed to send in any baked goods from home in lunches or for class celebrations due to the fact that someone may have an allergy.
