We're moving to Orlando!

I'm sooo glad to see this thread! My mom and I are hoping to move to the area around July and this info is very helpful! :goodvibes

Good luck with your move to Orlando :goodvibes
I'm not jealous, I'm not jealous :bitelip:

Jezebella (or anyone else w/ this kind of info)

My husband got offered a position with a freight co at MCO (he's currently at JFK) and we're going to look into it more during our 1/20-1/29 trip. Just in case- whats a good community with good schools thats not too much of a commute from MCO?

There are not many communities here where you can walk to shops and restaurants. Dr. Phillips, Celebration and Winter Park maybe. You really have to drive most places in Orlando. And driving here is not fun:) I-4 is a death trap. Celebration has a few restaurants and some tourist like shops. Most come and go quickly-can't afford the high rents:( Most people that move to Celebration live here for a few years and then move on. It has become way too pricey here for what most employers pay. Some townhome owners are paying $700+ for their maintenence fees per month. Most condo fees are $300-450 a month. :sad2: Taxes are very high. My parents pay way more than they did in NY. The weather is nice in the fall/winter and being close to WDW is great. The crime is on the rise. We are even getting a lot of it coming into Celebration. People are not making a living wage here and when that happens people get desperate. Not good.

:cheer2: :cheer2: HOW EXCITING!:cheer2: :cheer2:
You are sooooo lucky! Are you moving there strictly because of WDW or did you "have" to transfer?:dance3: That would be my fantasy:rotfl: to live close enough to work there. No, wait a minute my fantasy would be to live there, go everyday and NOT have to work!:p

I know that there is alot of new development going on just west of Disney. They have added exits to the interstate and I can see apartments being built. I have no knowledge of what they are but at least they are new and there will be continued development around them It seems in FL that if you build it they will come!

I do know that the Dr Phillips area may have what you want. If you get off the interstate at Sand Lake Road and go in the opposite direction of all the tourist things you will find a surprisingly nice community.

We were just there staying on Int'l and driving around alot and couldn't believe all of the construction just south of the Convention Center continuing on down towards Gaylord. May have been mostly condo but some looked very much like "apt" style construction we have in Atlanta. What about checking for sublets of condos........I would think some are investing in them and then renting them out.

We also went to a fairly new Publix on Sand Lake Drive, north of I-4, away from International. Both sides of the street had new village style shops and restaurants and seemed to be lots of construction in the area.

Thats the Dr Phillips area....lots of GREAT restaurants there, and good shopping (for normal, everyday stuff).

I see no one has suggested Altamonte Springs. We loved Altamonte. I know that there isn't a lot of walking to the shops type areas but it (at least a couple years ago) had very good schools.

I lived at Plantation Park, which is in Lake Buena Vista. It's within walking distance to the Premium Outlets, Dixie Stampede, Bahama Breeze, grocery stores, etc. They went condo, but the owners rent out the condos as apartments. I would strongly recommend it if you're looking to be within a mile of Disney World.

Hi there. I just found this web site a few days ago. We too are moving to Florida. We are looking in the Kissimmee / St. Cloud area. We are just days away. We are out of our place on Jan 31. We are down the road Feb 11th.

I am moving a family of 7, Wife, 5 kids (20,18,15,13,8) and myself. We are looking for jobs and housing when we get there. May start out at Disney, the wife and 2 kids are looking at Disney too.

Good Luck, Rob :cool2:

Ok, wait..you are going down there with family and you haven't got jobs yet? That is a really bold move! I admire your courage to do that. We've thought of this down the road but i never knew anyone that actually just picked up their lives and transplanted them in FL on a whim. Keep us posted!

I will try to keep everyone posted. We know we will have no trouble finding jobs. Disney is always hiring. I know the pay is low, but we will have 3 adults working FT. I am also apply for jobs at the Orlando Airport. :goodvibes

The hard part is finding housing. :scared1: It may take a week or 2. Jobs less than a week.

I'm going to jump in on this conversation-- what were housing prices here? I think I've hit this area before as a good location.

On our December trip, DH rec'd a job offer on of all places Main Street - good for next two years (not working for Disney but in Orlando). I, however, would have to find a job before we could move. Could someone please set out the pluses (besides Disney World) I went to citadata.com and everyone was saying to get out of Orlando. I am perplexed about one thing -- a salary calculator has no difference between where I am in TN and Orlando. The houses down there -- waaaaaaaaaaaaay more expensive than the ones up here. And salaries about the same.
