We're going to Disney...

I really hate when people say that!

I been spending a lot of time on the WDW boards planning our trip later this year. I knew people did it but it's just irritating me more and more as I see people constantly referring to Disneyworld as Disney. Since when was WDW officially granted the "Disney" moniker? I never see anyone refer to Disneyland as Disney. If anything, Disneyland should get the Disney moniker since it was the only park Mr. Walt Disney ever stepped foot in.... Just venting, that's all.

:rolleyes1 I always refer to DL as Disney. Probably because its the only one I've been to. :upsidedow

I tend to call Disneyland, Disneyland or DLR depending on who I'm talking to. Likewise, I call Disney World, Disney World or WDW.

I do think some of the "Disney" name stems from the name itself. Disney World is two words, so the natural abbreviation/shorthand would be Disney. Disneyland is all one word, so it doesn't break up as easily.

Hey sorry but I'm with them. When you say "I'm going to (lets just insert for sake of example) Olive Garden", you don't have to specify which chain.

It's all Disney. I do agree with others who mix up the land and world, that can be annoying. But you can definitely say "We're going to Disney!" and it can apply to all of them!

Yup. I think if you're on this board (or the West Coast), Disney = Disneyland. If you're on the WDW board (or east of the Mississippi), then Disney = WDW. If you live in the midwest and are equidistant to the two parks, well...then you get to put up with us nutjobs on either coast. :)

I haven't noticed a lot of people out where I live (or on the Disney..I mean Disneyland...board here) refer to WDW as Disney. Seriously, I'm sure it's a regional thing.

On the DIS boards I'll always use the correct terminology for a specific resort (ie DLR, WDW, DLP, HKDL, TDL, and what I can only assume will be SDL). But if I'm referring to any/all Disney resorts around the world, I'll just use Disney (eg I really need a Disney trip this year!). In general conversation with non-Disney enthusiasts, I'll just use Disneyland CA/Paris/Hong Kong/Tokyo/Shanghai or Disney World.

I say I am going to Disney. This year I am going to DisneyLAND, but I still say "Disney".

"We're going to Disney!" Sounds like a joyful phrase in a World--or Land ;) of insanity.

I am with you 100%. It drives me crazy because I try to lookup Disneyland info on google or pintrest just typing Disney only brings up Disney World stuff. I do not understand how that happened. If anything, "Disney" should refer to the original.

Maybe everyone refers to it as Disney but I definitely notice it more amongst the WDW crowd. I fact they used that phrase in an advertising campaign a few years ago when that had people saying "I'm going to Disney", and it bothered me back then too...

I think the thing that bothers me about it is that they are taking a mans name and turning it into a location, and to make it worse they are not even using it in the correct context. Kinda like saying "I'm going to Grandma!". When Walt built Disneyland he called it Disneyland. He never called it Disney... "Hey come visit us, you're going to love Disney". That would be creepy! I'm sure if he saw it to completion he would have called it Disneyworld, rather than Walt Disney World.

Just Sayin!

I refer to either of them like that. Most of my friends that I might be talking to really don't care where exactly I'm going so there's no need to be specific or use exact terminology. Doesn't bug me.

If I open a theme park and call it MollyLand I promise to not mind if people refer to it by my name. Though given what people are using my name to refer to nowadays, not sure that would be a good idea lol. (Who uses a perfectly decent old fashioned name to refer to drugs, and how did it happen? Also how can we make it stop?)

I work for an International company and have folks on both coasts and different continents say that phrase. I always ask for clarification! Sometimes folks aren't even going to WDW, DLR, DL Paris, HK Disney - and they all say they are going to Disney! Someone might be going to the most magical place, the happiest place or even the Wizarding World LOL - it wouldn't be my place to be upset about what phrase they use, just that they aren't taking me!

Agreed. :thumbsup2
That phrase exemplifies annoyingly poor grammar. Disney is a surname/corporation--not a location. I know it's currently en vogue to abbreviate everything, but does it really save anyone any time or effort to drop "world" or "land" from the word?

With all that being said, if someone asks me to go to Disney with them, I'm saying yes. :)

I agree 100%. I also find it annoying that a lot of the WDW vets come on this board to tell us everything that is wrong with DLR compared to WDW. Hey Jack, if you do not like DL, do not go! They are different parks, located thousands of miles apart, that just happen to be owned by the same company.
The wife and I travel a lot for business and get to visit many, many places. Each place is unique, enjoy what each has to offer folks. :cool1:

I'm a WestCoaster, but it doesn't bother me too much. Honestly, when I tell people out here that I'm going to Disney World, they just hear "Land". They don't get why I go to FL for my Disney trips. I say Disney when I mean Anaheim because that's what other California's "get". But I proudly say Disney WORLD when I can actually afford to go there.

Is Disneyland Walt's original? Yes. Is it the only park he walked in? Technically yes. But remember that WDW is probably the place that best realized his vision. 4 parks, 20+ hotels, even a community (though not quite E.P.C.O.T. as he envisioned) where people can live and be a part of the Disney World "village". I used to be like a lot of you, thinking that DL was superior. But that was before I went to WDW. Game changer.

I tend to agree with you CrazyDuck. I use the term Disney to refer to the parks/films/ect as a collective. Not to refer to one specific park. To me I think the annoyance I tend to get from someone using the term "Disney" to refer exclusively to WDW speaks more to this attitude/undercurrent of superiority that often tends to accompany/dominate many WDW fans/vets thoughts.

Am I saying that this is the context in all coversations that use Disney to refer to WDW? No absolutely not, for some it truly is just an innocent shortening of the name, but I totally get what you are trying to say.

OMG Molly!!! You crack me up!! :lmao: Love it!!

I agree Crazy Duck, saying "we're going to Disney!" is totally annoying. It is annoying for my DH when I say that I am going to get "a coffee" someplace. It just drives him batty!

No one says they're going to the State of Washington, or Washington State, or even Washington D.C.(for the most part). They say they're going to Washington. Named after a pretty famous guy, his name has become synonymous with those locations. I'm sure Walt would take great pride that his name represents such great places. It's befitting for a man who may be more famous than the actual Founding Father.

Touche'

...and when they split California into multiple states, they can name that region Disney. :goodvibes

But wait, Washington is derived from the washing town, wherever that was, so his name was already a location. :confused3

I can see your point, but I definitely prefer it to my mother's habit of referring to both WDW and DLR indiscriminately as "Disneylandworld." She can't remember which is which and figures they're interchangeable. Drives me bonkers!!!
