Hello everyone,
First let me say---We had the most fabulous time in our lives!!!!!
I will write a very long trip report later and let you know when that is posted! Here is the short version.
We left on Sun Aug 14 at 6:00pm after sitting on the beach and my MIL saying "if I was you I would just leave now!" my DH took off with that idea, big mistake!
we drove through the first night and ended up just outside NYC (in Conn) so we got a hotel and slept for awhile then left again at suppertime (another mistake) so we are driving through the Bronx around 5:00pm, we drive all night till SC (South of the Border, there's a whole other story there!), we actually spend the day (partly sleeping) and night because one of my sons was car sick (it was definitely the heat, remember no AC), poor little guy!
Then off in the am (this is now Wed) and , it was so hot (which we expected) but we finally made it , we were able to get into the DTD DoubleTree a day early so that was great! Another story for later except that this hotel was great, staff very friendly, just wonderful , so close to everything!
We tried to do as much as we could but that was impossible with the heat and crowds. We did take a lot of afternoon breaks to avoid complete meltdowns from all of us! It was 109 with humidex on our first day at MK, we arrived later because we decide to pick up our tickets (Ticketmania) and when we finally arrive to MK around 10:00am and we're all excited my husband locks his keys in the van, another story, we call CAA (AAA) and they keep saying they can't find the province New Brunswick, keeps asking my DH if he's sure that's the name of it while me & the kids are melting in the parking lot, yes NB, atlantic Canada, Maritimes,etc....My 12 yr old found a stick and they managed to unlock before AAA even found NB in their computers (gonna speak to CAA today!!!!)
We found MK very hot and crowded but very fun and full of Disney magic, we loved MGM, we loved Epcot FW, we loved, loved AK, we really enjoyed Epcot WS (kids were interested but still even with Kidcot not much for the 9 yr olds, 12 yr old liked it,I can see loving without kids!). Since we were so close to DTD we spend a lot of our free time there, we loved it. we di d Blizzard Beach one day, we did Disney Quest twice. Besides a few minor glitches we had a wonderful time. Here is a gross example of one glitch, after BB we went in to buy a Mickey Beach towel so I bought the kids some Disney Chocolate bars , they only had the sugar free ones but bought them anyways, 2 hours later , with a span of 45 minutes of each other all three of my boys had major diaherrea?, they didn't feel sick, just I GOTTA go now, one of my little guys had a accident, he was pretty embarassed being 9 yrs old and all, we were downstairs in the dining room having supper, so I went upstairs and got him a change of clothes, cleaned in up in the lobby bathroom, this would be the second of my boys that had it, then as soon as we walked into the room my 12 yr old had to go, we have now officially nicknamed those the "disney Diaherrea bars" and joked that we should we bring some back for some of special friends, LOL
like I mentionned I will write a trip report ( no, that wasn't it!)
We left on Monday am after we knew Hurricane Katrina was not whiping around back towards the east coast (unbelievable the devastation is did , very tragic). We drove as far as Virginia, right before Richmond and spent the night there. We left at 10am and stopped for the night at 10pm. We felt the heat disappear right before our very eyes on the north end of Georgia, which was a great releif for the driving! We left Va around 8:30 am and arrive at my doorstep 23 hours later, straight through!!!!!!
The moral to our story is we loved it all, even the driving part, the kids were so great (a little surprising really!). They loved figuring out where we were, they even had a contest " The worst bathroom in the US",- the winner is in Conn. somewheres!!!
I know, here it comes, you see this coming don't you--we thought this would be the "trip of a lifetime" but the biggest surprise was how much DH loved it so we begin saving our $$$ today and we are planning another trip for 2 or 3 yrs away.
Thanks to all of you with all your advice and we will talk soon, I am so excited about planning another trip, even if it's far away!!!
