We returned two weeks ago from our amazing first trip to WDW. First, thank you to everyone for the tips I picked up here before going - things would have been very different without them! ie thanks to being there in time for rope drop in the morning, then coming back after lunch to take a break, we encountered very few lines, and remained sane and rested! We also know about the Wishes Dessert Party and getting our ADRs done in good time!

DH and I and DDs 6 and 12 spent 16 nights at SSR, with DDP, through Virgin Holidays. It was supposed to be our one and only trip of a lifetime, but within about 20 minutes of checking in we knew we'd have to be back. It surpassed all expectations.

The resort was beautiful. Having done mainly beach holidays before we were a bit concerned we'd feel so exhausted on this holiday we'd need another as soon as we got back but this wasn't the case. SSR was so relaxing and we could easily have holidayed there and not done any parks! We were in the Paddock right next to the pool, which we'd use most afternoons after returning from an early morning in the park. The girls got involved in lots of crafts and games and, what with one lifeguard per about 10 people we felt they were in good hands while we read a book for an hour.

DDP was excellent for us. Particularly enoyed CRT, Hollywood Brown, Rainforest, Fulton's. We used snacks for things like ice creams and fruit to have for breakfast so apart from days at Universal, Seaworld and KSC spent virtually nothing on food.

Having been to DLP twice and feeling slightly underwhelmed by it, we were wowed by WDW. Of course the parks are out of this world and we spent a lot of time screaming and laughing our heads off and saying "again, again!". The CMs, from bus drivers, to Cinderella and friends, to waiting staff, were fantastic. Walking home tiredly from the bus stop one evening a bus driver called out to us to stop, whereupon she handed the girls rings because "the princesses looked like they needed these". They really were treated like royalty.

If I had to mention a low, it would be the driving. We did not find it easy! DH drove but I didn't get behind the wheel. We arrived in a thunderstorm, and even with the satnav, getting the short distance to the hotel was very scary! What's with all the undertaking, and the exiting the motorway both on the right and the left, and all the mad traffic lights above your head?? And when the satnav told us to take the "ramp" we were bemused! Oh, and our journey to KSC took 3 HOURS due a catastrophe with the satnav. We thought we'd asked to go to KSC, but having scrolled through the address found it had assumed we wanted "Kennedy Space Center Federal Cube". Huh? I have no idea what that it, but it was about 1 hour due north of Orlando. Anyway, having spent a fortune switching roaming on on my phone we found the address and were on our way...

We were so sad to have to come away! We don't have the pennies for next year, and having stayed onsite I know it's definitely for us and would like to do it that way again. So maybe 2014?! Let's hope the free dining offer continues!

Catherine it was so lovely to read your report - seeing it through 'fresh'' eyes again :)

We try to go every 2 years so still have the excitement - this may be out last trip for a while so it was great to read about your holiday and we all can't wait.

I think you will do better with the driving next time - although the I4 can be mad (if that is the way you went) - we try to avoid it at busy times :)

Happy planning for your next trip!!

You,ve got the bug! there is no turning back now. I will not holiday anywhere else now. So glad you had a good time. There is nothing that compares in my eyes and it was lovely to hear you had such a good first experience.

Disney is an expensive hobby, once you start there is no stopping!

Thank you! It was such a magical time and I suppose it's a silver lining we can't go back too soon as it will still be fresh (though Dh will probably have lost his hard won driving skills!)

I know! I'm already wondering what ' luxuries' we can give up so we can go back, like shoes, clothes, food...

So pleased you are hooked and happy you had such a good time. We are saving up for 2015, which will then be a gap of 9 years since our last trip in 2006!!!! which i can't believe, but we are having to save pennies, I know it will be worth the wait. We have been 4 times and there is no where else I'd rather holiday :goodvibes

i agree about the driving in orlando - and i'm an american..
i think the driving there is terrible - the drivers are awful and the signs are worse!!
definitely not a pleasant experience at all.
and i usually LOVE to drive....just not in orlando!!!!

Loved reading this, great reminder to us all about the magic of all our 1st visits.
I have been fortunate that i have been able to go several times, and going back again next year having not been since 07, and i'm starting to get the buzz already. Its great i am back on these boards absorbing all the info and tips once again! Makes me wish i was going tomorrow instead of June/July.

Both my DW and I actually don't mind driving in Orlando, normally i start from the airport and drive down to Orlando on the I4. I do feel comfortable driving after about 15mins in the car, however with lots of tourists driving in the area i think this is why people get more nervous on the roads.
My DW enjoys driving over there too, she doesn't drink at all so i do get allowed the occasional beer at night and she drives home to our resort/hotel/villa, but to me the holiday is not for drinking, like we do in Europe. I treat it as great quality family time and the car gives us extra freedom to explore the surrounding areas and maybe drive to shopping malls further away from the tourist areas as bargains are better the further you get from the tourist hub. We do however also make a wrong turning somewhere, sometimes she is at fault sometimes me, we will argue at first then laugh when we sort ourselves out, think it would be strange but amazing if we never took at least one wrong turning the whole time, it's just part of our adventure.

Hope its not to long before you get the chance to return to the magic, and maybe driving won't be as difficult.

What a lovely trip summary, thanks for taking the time to report back and now you get to pass on some tips to other first timers like me :thumbsup2

Catherine it was so lovely to read your report - seeing it through 'fresh'' eyes again :)

Exactly what I was thinking as I read it :)

It was supposed to be our one and only trip of a lifetime, but within about 20 minutes of checking in we knew we'd have to be back.

I love that sentence! We had our 'once in a lifetime' trip in 2005 :goodvibes

Your driving experience made me remember how frustrated DH and I got with each other as we drove for the first time - we didn't realise the street signs were the streets you were passing rather than the one you were actually on, it took us ages to get to where we wanted to go :)

We didn't know that about the street signs! It explains at least two arguments DH and I had though. It's reassuring to know we weren't the only ones who struggled with getting about!

Yep, you sure have got the bug.
We love beans in our family, theirs nothing wrong with putting a bit of cardboard in your shoes, and that hole in my t shirt, built in air conditioning;)

What a lovely report - we always thought it would be a one off trip too - I returned less than a week ago and will be booking our sixth trip tomorrow!

When we arrived in Orlando on 19th there was an awful rain storm - you literally could not see anything with the wipers on super speed - was pleased we had booked a town car transfer and were not driving. I was shaking it was that bad and I was not even driving - it was quite scary!

Having been once, it makes it so much easier for your future trips! things like taking advantage of the free magical express (regardless of who you book with when staying onsite) you can pick up a hire car whilst at Disney so at least you don't need to drive on arrival!

Our holiday this year would have cost us £4000 more if we had booked with Virgin .... Perhaps you can get back sooner than you think by shopping around!

So please you had a great time!
