You may not have noticed that I was gone, but my family was at WDW for 10 days from April 4 thru April 14. We just got back last night.

We flew non-stop from Minneapolis to Orlando, using an aisle chair to get DD onto the plane and gate checking her wheelchair. DH, DD and my mother in law got upgraded to first class.
We used DME to get to OKW from the airport - no problem and a pretty short wait.
So, everything went pretty smooth, at least until we got to OKW. We checked in, were given our room and DH asked if it was an accessible room with a roll in shower (which we had pre-arranged with Special Needs and re-confirmed once a month since the reservation was made). The CM said, "It's first floor. All the first floor rooms are accessible." DH and I explained that a wheelchair could be brought into a first floor room, but not all have roll in showers, which was what we reserved. She said our room did not have a roll in shower and that our reservation on the computer mentioned nothing about a roll in shower, but that first floor was wheelchair accessible. We said again that we had reserved a fully accessible room with a roll in shower and that we had called once a month to verify that it was still in the computer.
The CM went to the back room and when she came back, she said they had no rooms with roll in showers, but would have one available the next day. DH said that was not acceptable and we wanted to talk to a manager. During the whole time, there was a CM working on a portable computer in the background, who indicated he was a manager and then started quickly typing into his computer. He finally said he had found a room with a roll in shower for us.
When we got to the room (2010 - the studio portion of a 2 bedroom lock off and 2011 - the one bedroom part), both areas had roll in showers with fold down seats. Unfortunately, the fold down seat in the master bath had a problem. It had a small crack and although it could be folded down to sit on it, it could not be secured up so that people could stand and take a shower.
We called Maintenance right away, but they had no replacement seat and would have to order one. The Maintenance CM said if he removed the seat, the shower would be out of commission until they could replace the seat with a new one. So, the CM fastened it up with some bungee cords and then they brought us a portable bath bench. It was a little low and DD would not have been able to use it if she transferred herself, but with us lifting her, it was OK.

We had rain the first 2 days, made trips to all of the Theme Parks and rode the renovated Spaceship Earth. Other highlights included:
= riding POC with no problem and DD's wheelchair delivered to us at the exit.
= Tower of Terror (I hate that ride, but it was worth it to see DD's delight)
= Soarin' (love that ride)
= my first ever ride on Aladdin's Magic Carpet

I got lots of new ride car pictures to post and took lots of notes on everything we went on.

And, the best part was that the weather at home was awful while we were gone (freezing rain, sleet and snow), but today was a beautiful day at home and all our snow is melted.

Glad to hear you had fun Sue. The only issue we encountered on our trip was at the Orlando airport security checkpoint coming home. I don't know if I mentioned this in my trip report but, the screener made me take off my headband-style bone conduction hearing aid and my AFO leg brace after both my mom and I explained what they were and what they were used for. They were especially suspicious about my hearing aid. Still can't figure out why but I guess that they just wanted to be cautious. My mom explained to them that I was completely deaf in my left ear after I took my hearing aid off, and that if the woman screener wanted to give me instructions she had to be on my right side for me to hear her.

All went well and Dan and I had a lot of fun with my mom's friend while my mom and godfather worked at their meetings.

Glad you had a good trip except for the hassle at OKW. I'm nervous over our Dec. ressie there. I've never had a GV before but reserved one with borrowed points this year so that all my kids, spouses, and grandson can be really comfortable. As most know there aren't many fully accessible GV's and I'm worried that mine will somehow be given away. I hope you follow up with MS to let them know what happened and the challenge you had on check-in day with the room not being blocked. Sounds like their front desk CM's need a little education and a dose of pixie dust!---Kathy

Welcome back. We didn't have too much trouble while you were gone. Glad, other than minor problems) that you all had fun, and the flight upgrade was nice.

Now when are you going to try DD's power chair on a flight?

Hey - why didn't they upgrade YOU to first class on the plane?

Sounds like you had a great trip other than the problem in the beginning with getting the room you had arranged. I wonder how that got messed up considering all the care you took to arrange it!

Spring is here for us - hope it reaches MN in a big way soon.:goodvibes

Glad you had a good trip, and you came home to no snow, what a bonus.:goodvibes

Quick question: When you renewed your DDs GAC, did you have to re-explain her needs or just gave them previous GAC and told CM that her needs had not changed? We have not bothered getting a GAC since -1/2006 due to going at low crowd times, but am planning on getting one 12/2008 since we will be there Christmas week so not too familiar with GAC procedures anymore.

Glad you had a nice vacation. I didn't know you went but I noticed you weren't posting. :rotfl: I bet the parks were pretty clear during the rain. Nice time to get some rides done :goodvibes

Glad to hear you had a nice trip! I'm looking forward to seeing the pix you took.

We are planning to follow up, but we're too worn out right now to think about it.
We also have a trip planned for October and are concerned about our room blocking. You would think calling once a month to check would be enough:confused3

Maybe in October (if we get brave, really brave)

Well, one other time, when it was DH, DD and I traveling, they had 2 seats in First Class and I was going to sit with DD. But, she's daddy's girl, so I had to sit in the back.

When we went to Guest Services, it was kind of obvious that DD would benefit from a GAC. I said she had one before and explained her needs a bit (not in great detail) and said that the GAC we had before had met her needs well. The CM glanced at the old GAC after the explanation and we got a GAC.
The information in the disABILITIES FAQs thread is still accurate.

Gez Sue, I wish I had known as Jim and I were there from April 2-6th. Rats. Had some problems with the rooms and transportation but otherwise had a good time.

I planned to put something on the board before I left, but time really got away from me. Hopefully, I will plan better in October. Also, in October, it will be just me, DH and DD.
On this trip we had a crowd - me, DH, both our DDs, MIL, my mom, my sister and her DD.

Where are you due to stay in October? Depending on the place, perhaps some help can be offered. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! ;)

Been wondering where you been. Missed you looking over my shoulder like a guardian angel. Canot wait for a full report.

hugs
missed you

Heh - I was thinking after I asked that if it was me I might not have minded to sit by myself and have some time to read - LOL! I always sit with the kids and they usually keep me busy the entire flight with one thing or another.

When are you going to do a DCL cruise? I think the mod of the disAbilities board should get a discount - so you can do some research for the board of course (what are those hc rooms really like? how well do the kids clubs manage with special needs, are the mickey bars really peanut free?)! Maybe the co-mod should go with you....;) :cool1: There is that podcast cruise in May 2009 that looks pretty sweet!
