You may not have noticed that I was gone, but my family was at WDW for 10 days from April 4 thru April 14. We just got back last night.
We flew non-stop from Minneapolis to Orlando, using an aisle chair to get DD onto the plane and gate checking her wheelchair. DH, DD and my mother in law got upgraded to first class.
We used DME to get to OKW from the airport - no problem and a pretty short wait.
So, everything went pretty smooth, at least until we got to OKW. We checked in, were given our room and DH asked if it was an accessible room with a roll in shower (which we had pre-arranged with Special Needs and re-confirmed once a month since the reservation was made). The CM said, "It's first floor. All the first floor rooms are accessible." DH and I explained that a wheelchair could be brought into a first floor room, but not all have roll in showers, which was what we reserved. She said our room did not have a roll in shower and that our reservation on the computer mentioned nothing about a roll in shower, but that first floor was wheelchair accessible. We said again that we had reserved a fully accessible room with a roll in shower and that we had called once a month to verify that it was still in the computer.
The CM went to the back room and when she came back, she said they had no rooms with roll in showers, but would have one available the next day. DH said that was not acceptable and we wanted to talk to a manager. During the whole time, there was a CM working on a portable computer in the background, who indicated he was a manager and then started quickly typing into his computer. He finally said he had found a room with a roll in shower for us.
When we got to the room (2010 - the studio portion of a 2 bedroom lock off and 2011 - the one bedroom part), both areas had roll in showers with fold down seats. Unfortunately, the fold down seat in the master bath had a problem. It had a small crack and although it could be folded down to sit on it, it could not be secured up so that people could stand and take a shower.
We called Maintenance right away, but they had no replacement seat and would have to order one. The Maintenance CM said if he removed the seat, the shower would be out of commission until they could replace the seat with a new one. So, the CM fastened it up with some bungee cords and then they brought us a portable bath bench. It was a little low and DD would not have been able to use it if she transferred herself, but with us lifting her, it was OK.
We had rain the first 2 days, made trips to all of the Theme Parks and rode the renovated Spaceship Earth. Other highlights included:
= riding POC with no problem and DD's wheelchair delivered to us at the exit.
= Tower of Terror (I hate that ride, but it was worth it to see DD's delight)
= Soarin' (love that ride)
= my first ever ride on Aladdin's Magic Carpet
I got lots of new ride car pictures to post and took lots of notes on everything we went on.
And, the best part was that the weather at home was awful while we were gone (freezing rain, sleet and snow), but today was a beautiful day at home and all our snow is melted.
