Ugghhh! Had a doctor appointment today. One value on my glucose test was abnormal, 2 were two points away from abnormal, and the 4th value was the high end of normal. So, the doctor is going ahead with the diagnosis of gestational diabetes. I see a dietician next week. And then have an ultrasound. I will have another blood test about 2 weeks after starting the diet.

No more sweets!!!! AGGGHHH!!!

Don't worry! I suffered from the same thing during my pregnancy & the diet was not difficult to follow. NOW.....I say this being very overweight but for the health of my baby, it was absolutely not a struggle to stay on the diet & I lost over 30 lbs during my pregnancy (remember, I said I am overweight ~ obese is more like it! ) People of average weight do not lose weight, but maintain or gain very little during their pregnancy. I didn't have to go on insulin & after about 2 months of poking my fingers each day to test my sugar & the Doc saw that I was able to keep my sugar under control, I only had to test myself twice per week.

Pregnancy was a breeze & so was delivery. (Of course you're old hat at that, aren't you?? :teeth: )

You & baby will be fine, don't worry! ;)

THAT is BAD!!!

Seriously, I'm sorry to hear that. I seem to be hearing alot of this lately.

This will be a piece of cake (oops-- sorry ;)) compared to your son's gluten free diet.

6timemomma-

I had gestational diabetes with my last two pregnancies. The dietician, put me on a 2000 calorie a day diet. She broke down everything I could eat each meal. The carbs are real killers. Gotta watch those.

I lived on peaches and cottage cheese. Which I love, so that wasn't too bad.

Lots of salad and veggies.

A good amount of protein. It wasn't bad at all. If you have any questions, e-mail me or pm. I'd be glad to talk with you.

Oh I am sorry. This happened to me during my last pregnancy (15 years ago). It's tough being pregnant and on a special diet! There are alot of dietbetic foods available today, many very tasty. I am sure the dietician will have good news for you.
Little Olivia should be here shortly, and it will all be worth it.:D

I just had my third baby. I was fine during the first two pregnancies but this last one I developed Glucose Intolerance. I took the 3 hour glucose test which involves for blood tests. I flunked one blood test and was borderline on two of the others. My doctor said I wasn't full blow diabetes but borderline.

I had to do the diet thing too. It worked at keeping things under control and I also did feel alot better on the diet. Before I found out I had this, I was so so tired and exhausted. After about a week on the diet, I started to get some energy back.

The carbohydrates are the biggest things to watch. I found that three small meals a day plus three snacks a day plus a middle of the night snack worked best for me. Basically, I was eating a small meal almost every two to three hours. The dietition gave me a huge packet of information and also a carbohydrate list of all the foods you can buy at almost every fast food place out there.

Some of my favorites that were allowed were taco salad (no chips) from Wendy's. A double cheeseburger from McDonalds.

The biggest thing is to cut out the french fries, buns and bread, chips, anything that is potatoes. You really have to limit and watch your milk products also. You can have cheese and yogurts but straight milk, milk shakes, and ice cream are bad in carbs.

I did manage to loose about five pounds during my eigth month of pregnancy due to the diet.

I did manage to get pregnant again so I am just starting my fourth pregnancy. I'm crossing my fingers I don't have problems this time but if I do I already know it won't be that bad.

Good luck with your pregnancy.
Beth

I am so tired all the time, but I figured it was just "general" pregnancy tiredness. Maybe the diet will help that! :)

Absolutely!!

Lots of salad and veggies.

Not a good thing for me!! LOL!! I hate veggies!!

not a struggle to stay on the diet & I lost over 30 lbs during my pregnancy

That is one of the first things I told my DH....maybe I can somewhat limit my weight gain with the diet! A nice plus!

I too had gestational diabetes with my last pregnancy. I had to follow a strict diet or they told me insulin would be next:eek:
I ate lots of eggs and chicken. Could only have 1/4 of a bagel and only 1/2 a banana. I wound up losing 17 pounds during my pregnancy. I was lighter after I gave birth than before I got pregnant :)

Good luck with the diet Kristy :)

Just wait until you see all of the low carb, sugar free treats that are on the grocery shelves these days... It makes it alot easier for me, and I hope it makes it easier for you, too:D

My motto: Sugar free is SO different than treat free;)

Thats one word (well really two) that I never want to hear again. With my first pregnancy I controlled it by diet and exercise. But with my second, I was in the hospital for 7 weeks with preterm labor and exercise was not an option. So I had to poke my finger and take an insulin shot every morning....yeah. But the diet really helped. I was the enforcer at the hospital, I only ate what I was supposed to and if the cafeteria sent up something that they weren't supposed to (like one day for a snack they send up oreos...that was cruel) I was on the intercom with the nurse and she was on the phone with the cafeteria. I even found errors in their menu with their carb counts. Anyway, it's really not that bad. I got so good at the carb counting that I was able to squeeze in desserts like cheesecake with my dinner (I thinked all my items that I picked for dinner had no carbs, like chicken and salad so I could use my 65mg of carbs on cheesecake). It will be real easy to carb count...hang in there you'll make it. I have been told that the worst thing to do is have juice in the morning. And I gained only like 20 pounds with my 2nd...now if only I could lose it. I am now the opposite, low blood sugar so I still have to carb count but eat 6 times a day.

I had GD with my 4th. I panicked when they told me but it really turned out to be okay. It was easy to stick to the diet knowing that if I didn't there could be complications if my BS got out of control. By the end of my PG I found I could have a small ice cream cone or 1/2 a cinnamin roll and still be in good numbers. The hardest part was the Ketones. You need to mae sue you eat a snack before bed & maybe even when you get up to pee at 3am. The dietician will explain all of this to you.

You'll be going for non-stress tests every week towards the end and extra ultrasounds. Just be careful when they estimate the weight - they estimated my baby over 2lbs heavier than he actually weighed (8lb 13oz.).

You've got lots of support here. Good luck!

I'm sorry to hear this, Kristy. I sure hope changing your diet brings the diabetes under control.
