This time my 14 yr. old recent 8th grade graduate was her victim!

Let me set the stage...approximately 30 family and friends were gathered around my daughter as she went about opening her gifts at her graduation party. Most were envelopes, (which she really liked), but she also got some very nice gifts as well. The only one left in the stack was from my MIL. There were actually 2 boxes, which really surprised me, since she isn't known for her generosity. My daughter opened the first box, and pulled out a T-shirt. On the front it was a picture of a goofy looking guy with crossed eyes and hair standing straight up. It said:

i be a grad-u-it
i be smart

The look on my daughter's face was priceless! She tried to look grateful, but it wasn't easy. We all hoped that this was just a joke, and that the real gift was in the other box. It wasn't long before our hopes were dashed. It was...drum roll please...

An emergency evacuation ladder for her bedroom.

According to the box it is a rope ladder which you tie to your bed in case your house ever catches on fire. You can then safely climb out the window. The first thing I thought of was that she was helping my daughter find a way to sneak out of her room when she gets older! I can't imagine why ANY 14 yr. old girl would want one of these as a graduation gift. I have to give MIL points for creativity though!

Jill-- your MIL is priceless!

I bet she bought the emergency hammer and the ladder at the same time, and wanted to dole them out at the right time...

And yes, the first thing I thought of was sneaking out as well...

Your MIL must have an obsession with emergencies!

OMG, I cannot breathe! Your gift challenged MIL stories just crack me UP!

(thanks for the huge laugh this morning, Jill, I truly needed it! :p )

Sounds like we need to get your MIL together w/my MIL, they sound like they would get along swimmingly! My MIL went out and bought my son who is graduating from HS the worlds ungliest sneakers for his graduation gift, who gives sneakers for a graduation gift

Jill, there is NO hope for your MIL!!!:p :p :p :p She must have been a fireman/paramedic in a previous life! ;) ;) How does she come up with these ideas?

Congrats to your DD!:D

OMG! That was so funny! Do you just laugh out loud when these gifts are opened? I don't think I could control myself!:teeth:

The first thing I thought of was that she was helping my daughter find a way to sneak out of her room when she gets older!

I thought the same thing! LOL

OMG!! That is too funny! :teeth:

thanks for the giggle this morning!

OMG!! I'm rolling here!!

If she doesn't want it you can send it to my son because as bad as I hate to admit it he would LOVE IT!

He has this silly sense of humor (Adam Sandler like) and would wear that shirt everywhere!!

This is the same son who wore the shirt "JUST SHUT UP" to the Princess Breakfast at the Castle last September.

LOL! I love reading about your MIL's gifts!! Thanks for the laugh.

LOL Jill.....sorry about your strange mil. Some people just never learn You should give her toilet plunger for Christmas for her "emergency" stop ups.....Maybe she will get the point.

That is the funniest thing I've heard today!!! :teeth:

I bet she was the talk of the party after that!!! :teeth:

I was so happy to see the title of this thread -- couldn't wait to see what the gift was. My DM used to give some really strange gifts and we became pros at looking and sounding grateful! But sometimes it was so hard not to LOL. Anyway, at least your MIL really cares about your family's safety. :p

Oh my! That is too funny. :teeth: I tried to prepare myself when I saw the title of the thread, but I wasn't expecting that.

LOL, that is so funny. If the shirt wasn't bad enough she gives her the ladder. I thought the same thing about sneaking out. Your MIL sounds funny. I'll bet you look forward to see is she can top herself each time.

:teeth: Your MIL's gifts are too hysterical! Good grief, what goes through her mind when she buys them?!?

Well, she tries, bless her heart. Maybe she was thinking and being concerned for your DD's safety???

Jeafl, I was wondering what in the world she could do to top the emergency hammer! :jester: That is too funny!!!:jester:

TC:cool:

oh dear lord.. ... Jill.. ......... your DEAR MIL.. takes the cake..........
she is always good for a giggle!!!

I gotta tell you... when my eldest son, Mike, was in high school.. he probably would have loved the rope ladder! Would have saved him from gathering sheets to tie together to get out his second story bedroom late at night....

mama's mantra.. love my children.... love my children.. love my children....
