If anyone remembers, I started coughing on Easter Sunday. Had a cold, which turned into some bronchial thing.
After 2 weeks, it seemed to get better and then I had a relapse while at the vet with my dog and started with choking fits. That went on another week or two. Went back to the doctor and he told me that it was either another cold that reactivated a "postviral cough" or that I may have a sinus infection. He gave me some allergy meds (Flonase, Claritin) and then a script for Keflex to ONLY be used if my secretions turned green.
Like a good girl, I've really been working with the allergy meds. I get some relief. I have days where the cough is barely there and then days where it is there every five minutes. It's more of annoying cough that always brings up a small amount of mucous (not that I can *see* though). My post nasal "river" no longer seems to be there. Oh, and I rarely cough at night.
In the meantime, I've also been to my internal med doctor about my thyroid issues (just regular checkups). I run it past him and he says I sounds fine, that it is a tracheal irritation from the virus and will take awhile to heal. I've also had a chest x-ray through this (for thyroid issues) and my chest x-ray is normal, so whatever this is, it is not in the lungs. Definitely upper airway.
So, over the last few days, despite the allergy meds, the cough seems a bit more frequent. I also know that our grass pollen has been outrageous. Figured that was probably it. But, it has been 6 weeks and I am SICK of coughing.
So yesterday, I decided to have a cookout. I have my parents over and I cook some burgers. I was out on my deck and standing in smoke from the burgers. It was all over me. Then I sat on my deck for about 30 minutes. When I came in, I noticed I was doing a LOT of coughing. It was very bad. I figured it was either the smoke or the pollen (from being outside) that reaggravated everything. I took some Benadryl last night and went to bed. I was relatively cough free during the night, but when I got up this morning, my nasal passages are swollen and I'm doing a lot of coughing to try to clear this tight mucous. I finally coughed some up. The fact that I coughed it up signals that something is worse because I haven't coughed any mucous "out" since April. It was all very green. Now, either this is from my nose or something more is going on.
So, I threw my hands in disgust and took the Keflex this morning. If I have any "regulars" reading this, you'll know that I'm scared to death of meds. I swear I've become allergic to everything. I know I cannot take sulfa, and the last time I took penicillan or amoxicillan, I was fine. I've never taken Keflex or any of the cephalosporins.
So, yeah, I'm scared.
I'm just sitting here waiting to go into anaphalaxis
. I'm not sure I'd even know it with all the coughing I'm doing.
I sure hope this works. I'm so tired of coughing.
So can I ask for pixie dust: some to get me through the antibiotic without killing me and some to get me over this rotten cough!
Thanks.
