Well done steak?

Well, I had a few interesting experiences at Disney actually over this! I recall, at least twice, and I believe at the California Grill, the other at another signature, where I ordered a steak, in fact to be precise, what it really was was the Bison filet they had when I went early last year, and before I could get a word edgewise in, upon ordering I was given a long diatribe from the waitress over how it wouldn't be in my best interests to order this filet strip of Bison anyway other than rare and I had better prepare myself, because it will be rare when they serve it otherwise it would be ruined in the cooking process because Bison doesn't have alot of fat at all, even compared to a filet mignon which is pretty lean, relatively, Bison is far, far leaner.

Now, as it turns out, I always order all of my cuts either medium rare or medium, so this wasn't a big deal for me, but I have to say, if I was like one of the patrons such as our OP, I would have felt very uncomfortable at that point, in stating my wishes for wanting a cut well done, as it felt the waitress was ready to go into battle with me over the issue.

While she never said I couldn't request it cooked more, because she head me off at the pass and never actually gave the expected and polite, "And how would you like that cooked, sir?" question, I was felt like I couldn't tell her anything but what she wanted to hear.

Of course, this could very well have just been a bison sort of story because it is an unusual sort of meat to be cooking. And perhaps it's a moot point because I have a feeling that the kind of people who would be ordering a cut of meat well done would probably never be seen ordering something unusual off the menu like a Bison anyway? :joker:

Me, I'm always ordering stuff like wild boar and ostrich and escargot! And if I recall correctly, the bison was very expensive, like $50 so I certainly didn't wanna order it in a way that would ruin it.

You will not have a problem and most likely your server will not bat an eye, nor will you get lectured. I imagine the reason the PP was given a long drawn out discourse on how the bison was cooked was becuase it was bison. Very little fat at all, so well might mean too dry to eat.

We had a lady join us for dinner and her meat was ordered well. She was given well done meat.

To answer, I'm positive any place at Disney will cook to death any steak you wish.

On side notes, So many filet lovers that think they know what they eat. I guarantee a good butcher could pass off a few cuts as a Filet. I've seen it first hand and never heard a complaint.

Such a sad thing to see an animal be killed then cooked in such a manner though. It's like they gave their life for no reason. I know of places that serve their cuts without even asking how you want it cooked. They will say how it will be prepared so you know. It comes a perfect med rare as it should. If you don't like it then you obviously aren't their type of patron they seek and they have no issue if you eat somewhere else or choose a cheaper menu option. The customer isn't always right with food, the chef or butcher can be.
Seriously????? All this lecturing isnt necessary at all. Especially since all the OP wanted to know was if she'll have a hard time getting it cooked well-done. Wow. Honestly. Some people never cease to amaze me.

OP, dont listen to the "experts" and "lecturers" on this board. You will not have an issue getting it well done. Trust me its not that uncommon. I have a lot of family and friends who like their steak well done.

I used to like steak medium well and, across the board, I was initially served a medium well steak approx 70% of the time. This is for both Disney and non-Disney restaurants.

OMG are serious, I have been known to spend 500 dollars on dinner for 3 people and the drinks are separate, I am not their kind of patron? If I have the money and I am Paying for it, then cook it how I like it. I don't care what the best chef in the world says, taste is subjective, For example I love cabernet wine, I think it is delicious, my sister thinks it is bitter (subjective)

I always order my steaks well done. I just tell them I want it well done, no pink at all & they can butterfly it if needed.

Disney restaurants, just like other steak house restaurants usually gets it right but sometimes sends out an undercooked piece . If so it goes back to the kitchen.

I've only had to send back 2 of all the many steaks I've ordered at Disney restaurants. Once at Artist Point & once at LeCellier. All my return trips to those restaurants the steaks were perfect.

I realize lots of folks don't get the well done issue but they aren't eating it, I am. Seafood makes me very ill & undercooked meats likewise.

My thoughts exactly. Well said. :thumbsup2

.

Bison should not be cooked past medium rare or it gets super tough and just yuck. It is way too lean for well done cooking and will dry out quickly. I once overcooked a Bison steak to medium and it was almost impossible to eat. I mean, I forced it down because I wasn't going to waste that much money, but it was not enjoyable at all. My guess is the waitress had dealt with a few "but I want it well done!" even after being warned and then complained and wanted to be comped when it wasn't very good. So now she just heads it off with the strict warning.

I think OP asked if she will have any trouble getting a well done steak, not to be lectured on the proper way to cook or eat a steak, etc.

Enjoy your well done steaks! You will have no problem getting them at any TS restaurant. Have an awesome trip!

Oh come on, most of us were just teasing her. :)

Wow, the opinions about steak, lol! All I wanted to know is if I would have an issue. I know that some people believe that cooking a steak past medium isn't ok, I've had this discussion before with many of my friends and family. It's just like everything else in life, different tastes and different opinions. It's ok. I'm not at all offended by anything that has been said. I appreciate the info. I'll let y'all know how it goes!

don't even argue. I can't believe this conversation is even happening. I like my steak medium rare but cannot even tell you how little I care about how you like your steak!

And it's ridiculous about chefs giving sub-par cuts of meat to people who dare to order it well done. Sounds like a lot of effort to go through disguising something that is not filet as filet when you can just cook the damn filet just to be petty and obnoxious. Also sounds like a good way to get fired.

Also I am pretty sure the filet ends end up in kids meals... all of those "steak skewers" at signature restaurants... and my son ordered the kid's steak at Coral Reef and it was super tender cooked to medium perfection not very pretty but definitely very tasty tenderloin ends.
