I always have mine in my carry-on bag and not in my 3-1-1 bag. I have yet to be questioned on it.

Check the ounce size, my full size old spice is only a 2.8 oz. Anything under 3 is okay.

That's what I thought..duh. But dh questioned me so much on it that I began doubting myself. I have a very small travel size one that I keep in my 3-1-1 bag, with the full size one in my OL...so I began doubting myself.

That's actually kind of funny - I was looking for something last night in my always-semi-packed supposedly-fits-under-the-seat carry-on, and realized I have a full-size deodorant in there. Granted, it still doesn't take up a LOT of room, but a travel size would use even less. Gotta pack as efficiently as possible...

I had my solid deoderant in my quart sized ziploc and was told I didn't need it in there by a TSA agent during airport screening (was having trouble fitting everything in it). On my next trip, I left the deoderant loose in my carry-on and it caused me to get pulled aside for a bag search.

Next trip, if I have room, my solid deoderant is going in my ziploc or I'll put it in a 2nd ziploc and pull it out during screening. Since its not required to be in a ziploc, I won't officially be over my one bag limit but I don't know that every TSA agent will see it that way.

...TSA site has this statement:
Each traveler is limited to ONE, QUART-SIZE, clear plastic, zip-top plastic bag of travel-size toiletries (3 ounces or less). What does it mean by "toiletries"? Elsewhere on the TSA site, it is explained that the reason only one quart-sized bag is allowed is to limit the total liquid volume one person can bring onboard.

When trying to decide if something is a liquid/gel I go with this test: if moved, would it take the shape of the new container?

YES - liquid/gel - goes in 3-1-1 baggie
NO - solid - does not go in 3-1-1 baggie

A solid stick deodorant would not change shape (no 3-1-1), a liquid or soft-solid one would (goes in 3-1-1).

I have flow twice in the last month and have had no issues with my solid-stick deodorant being in my carry-on bag but outside of my 311 bag.

Another 311 issue that has tripped me up in the past: I have been pulled aside for toothpaste being in a tube larger than 3.4 oz and also for it not being in my 311 bag.

In Canada, the solid and powder deodorants are ok, gel and liquid have to be in the 3-1-1 bag.

And so does toothpaste.
