Sterling Woman's Slaying Leaves Family Perplexed

By Karin Brulliard
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, January 25, 2005; Page B01

Sherine Williams did not answer her family's repeated phone calls Sunday. Then she didn't answer when they knocked on the door and banged on the windows of her Sterling apartment later that day. When Williams's brother and sister finally got into her apartment by climbing through a window that night, they realized why they had been unable to reach her: Williams, 24, lay dead on her bathroom floor. There was blood "everywhere," and it looked as though Williams had been shot, said her sister, Shalene Williams, 20.

Siblings of Sherine Williams of Sterling found her body on the bathroom floor of her apartment Sunday. Authorities believe Williams knew her attacker.
Loudoun County authorities are investigating Williams's death as a homicide, but they have not said how she was killed. Sheriff's spokesman Kraig Troxell said authorities believe that Williams knew her attacker. It is "not entirely accurate" that she died of a gunshot wound, he said. Results of an autopsy conducted yesterday have not been released.

Williams's death left family members struggling to imagine who would kill the shy, private data entry clerk. "She's a nice person," said her mother, Gemma Williams, 45. "She didn't interact with nobody. I can't understand why a person would do something like this."

Sherine Williams's mother and sister last heard from her Saturday afternoon, when she telephoned and asked them to visit her because she was "bored," Gemma Williams said. They did not make the 20-minute trip from their Ashburn home to Williams's apartment, where she lived alone, because a heavy snow was falling, Shalene Williams said.

The next day, when the roads were cleared, Shalene Williams called her sister and got no response. Then Sherine Williams's boyfriend, who Shalene Williams said is in prison, called and said he had not been able to reach her, either. He had sent a friend to check on Williams, he told her family, and she had not answered the door.

Shalene Williams then went to the apartment, saw her sister's car and called the sheriff's office when she did not respond to her knocking. Deputies came about 4 p.m. but said they could not enter the apartment.

"There was no sign of foul play; there was no sign of anything amiss," Troxell said. The family "had talked to her the night before. And she is an adult."

About 8 p.m., Shalene Williams and her brother entered the apartment through a window, switched on the lights and found Williams's body in the bathroom, just inside the front door of her ground-level unit. Troxell said authorities believe she had been dead for "some time."

Yesterday afternoon, yellow police tape cordoned off a large section of the parking lot of the Reserve at Town Center apartments near Dulles Town Center. Crime scene investigators worked through Sunday night into yesterday, scouring the area for evidence. Deputies went door-to-door to ask Williams's neighbors if they had heard or seen anything unusual.

Sherine Williams's mother and sister said the young woman, a graduate of Loudoun Valley High School, was a smiling, shy homebody with a few close friends. She divided her time between working at a nearby Bank of America and relaxing at home over video and board games, Gemma Williams said. Williams planned to go to college and work her way up in the banking field, her mother said. "She wasn't really a party person," Shalene Williams said. "She just pretty much liked to stay in the house."

Shalene Williams said she did not know her sister's boyfriend's name or why he is imprisoned. She said Sherine Williams met him two years ago when they pulled up to a stoplight. Sherine Williams had no enemies that her family knew of, Shalene Williams said. "She was a loved person," she said.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Dissing.

Elaine...I have to stop by Wally world tonight, if I don't see them I may take you up on your offer.

Just back from the cemetary...without planning it, Dad and I were there the same time.

Hmmm...
Looks to me like AlabamaAlan's stealing the countdowns.

Looks like his first countdown is okay, and his second one doesn't show up. Then all the countdowns on a page that follow one of his posts are missing.

And, if I use my top-secret super duper webmaster powers to turn his signature off in a post, the stuff after his post starts working again. :wizard:

Alan, can you redo your countdowns?

webmaster kathy is HOT on Alan's Trail.... :moped:

Keep up the good work and the investagation!! :magnify:

Psst. I know that Bethie isn't really responsible for the snow but it is much more fun to blames someone, and she was willing to accept the blame. So, now, I will torment her about the time she was responsible for the blizzard of 2005, when 57 inches of snow fell on Boston. Mark my words, I will remind Bethie of this when everyone thinks I have forgotten about it. <insert evil laugh here>

HI everyone!!

Poking my head up from the snow - got about 26 inches here - kids didn't have school yesterday and my computer was not working...my Internert explorer disappeared...how wierd is that?? Oh well - I looked at just about every file all night long and finally found "system restore" - back up and running today!!!

Expecting 6 more inches of snow tomorrow and supposed to bring in my car (Ford Escape ) for recall work....may have to reschedule.

Oh yeah - as expected my office had limited staff yesterday so I ended up working from 7am - 12:30pm then from 5pm - 11pm - ah the joys of working from home.

I hope you are all having a sunny Tuesday - I'll try to keep up and post often..I was 5 pages behind.

Lizdotcom - I was laughing so hard at your link to Pam's Roadkill headwear - haha - DS's friend actually made a hat out of a rabitt skin this year!!!!

I love this... I get called for a work issue from another company and then they put me on hold to find out procedure for how to fix it....... I want the gum that's in my car dang it!

Kimmar, I would go home... especially if you can give this to someone else. Oh my ears pop all the time.. good luck!

Hope you had a good lunch, Stacy! I agree falling icicles are scary sounding!

And just got off the phone... I hate my job

Interesting article there Bethie... very sad... and even more so when I think that the parents/family probably had no clue of something going on in her life. At least that is what I would think about it.

Amanda, I hope you can find them, but if not let me know. I admit I had to pick up a set for myself since I know i can use them with some of my cooking!

Alan, you bad boy you!!!! Thanks Kathy for helping us out here :)

Guess I shouldn't mention that I have mink earmuffs and my guys have fox rendezvous hats, huh??

Pam - I have Windows XP - I found it under :
Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System restore

I just put in Sundays date because everything was working fine then and I was alll set.

Yeah, and ya know what gets me? The article says she was a data entry clerk. Now we all know that those jobs don't pay very well, even at Bank of America! The apartment she lived in is identical to ours, down a floor. So how the heck could she afford to live alone in an apartment where the rent is nearly $1400 a month?!!

Yay!! Paula fixed her computer!! Ya Yas are soooooo smart!!!! Say, how do you like your Escape? I like the looks of them, but was wondering how they drive and what kind of mileage you can get with yours.

Alan, don't feel bad--I have problems with copy and paste, too. But I NEVER run with scissors!! Now about that whuppin'......well, no, better not say anything...... :rolleyes1

JRKaren, remember what Francis Bacon said "This is certain, that a (wo)man that studieth revenge keeps his wounds green, which otherwise would heal and do well." Gangrene is pretty nasty.......... ;)

Sheesh!! I can't keep up with you mothy people!

Okay, so would you believe me if I said I had a ketchup that totally kicked ... ahem, but then I lost it due to an IE crash, or a... wait... lemme think... I know! A power outage! There was like this huge thunder storm and then the wind blew annnd... ummm...knocked a pole, yeah, a pole, it knocked it down in front of my house, ripping down with it, all of the power lines to the entire western half of my state.. and then... Oh! ...and it's my birthday too!!! ::yes::

** Okay, I just finished this post then re read it. Holy cow is it boring! Just skim it, or... better yet, skip it. It's dull I tell you!**

Oh man! It was pick on Beth week and no one told me?! Dang! Well, it looks like ya'll did a fine job without me anyway. ;)

Karen, how is the no smoking campaign going?! Your boys are basketball stars?! Yay! I know they've just got to look too cute out there!

Beth, that article! That poor girl! :( That sort of thing just leave me speechless!

Suzanne, excellent news about your schooling!! ...and Ed's Valentine gift sounds wonderful!! I just received mine from Tom today! On my doorstep this morning, was a little box. In that little box was the Evenstar Pendant from LOTR! It is soooo beautiful!

Hey Liz... How are you? Rose Mary! You have the ickies? I'm sorry! :( Hey I've heard of the Perricone diet!! I thought it looked really interesting! Which supplement do you think may be causing the problem?

I found another brand of jeans that fit!!! Wahoo! Well, sorta... but it was close so I won't complain. Finding jeans that don't do the monstro GAP from hell thing in the back and THEN in addition aren't 2 feet too long, is a huge thing!! So I found Tommy's "Jill" jeans today. Small gap, but guess I can live with it. ...AND I won't have to wear 6 inch heels with them, I can actually wear sneaks! Yay!! Life is good. Sigh. Ya know you're a simple soul when lack of gap'o'sis makes your day.

Sherry is DSL'ing! Wooo! We love ours!

Well I WAS going to ask what Haverty's was earlier on in my ketchuping but see the mystery was solved.

Hi Lily... always feels so good to get back into the exercise routine doesn't it?

Elaine was cranky yesterday? Uh oh! Probably because I didn't post. You know how she hates it when I don't post and she can't see my sig pics...

Speaking of sig pics... Tara's new picture is adorable!

Oh ~ No! Nancy is confetti rich and it's all Elaine's fault!

Paula, congrats to your daughter and her acceptance into the two schools!!

I haven't seen the YaYa movie yet. Need to do that.

Hey to Stacy. DCL in Feb or March? Well cool!

Caroline, nerts on the bummer birthday! Well hopefully next year we can all help make up for the sort've stinko time you had this year. Nancy is a master at keeping track of birthdays and making sure no one is forgotten. It's a big job and she's always handled it so well.

JRKaren, what a cute little BAB you got from the girls! That was so sweet of both of you! Okay okay... I promise to let you have your birthday all to yourself. :rolleyes1

TC, my condolences concerning Ed! Beautiful sentiments you shared with us. My prayers are with all of you.

Hey Kimmar. You're sick too!? Bleh! Lots of chicken soup, rest, etc etc... Hope you feel better soon!

Deena, $300.00 worth of water? Yikes! You have a leak somewhere? That stinks.

You should see my necklace! Oh. Hee. Actually, I guess ya'll probably have. Just watch the movie. Duh snork. It's prettier than I expected though... and heavy!
