Today when I got home from picking the kids up from school I was surprised to see a box from HSN at my front door. I haven't ordered anything from HSN for a couple years so I thought maybe UPS left the box at the wrong house but when I looked at it ,it was addressed to me. So I open it ( it's a waffle maker) and it is from someone that lives in my town - they ordered it and had it shipped to me BUT I do not know this person at all. I called HSN and they verified that this person called and wanted it shipped to me but after talking to customer service - I find out that this person opened their acct that day they ordered with my phone number as their phone number and ordered the item. I asked that they remove my phone number from this persons name and they tell me they can't! This person has to call and remove it. I looked up this person's name in the phone book and try to call them and guess what , their number is disconnected. I call HSN back to talk to a supervisor and they agreed that it seemed funny and sent it to fraud control. The supervisor did remove my telephone number from this person's name. The whole thing kind of creeps me out. I absolutely do not know who this is. This person has my name, address and phone number. Should I be worried that this person is trying to access my credit? Any suggestions to what I should do? :confused3

I would call your local phone company and explain to THEM the situation and NOW all of a sudden after they have ordered this item and used YOUR number, there REAL number (which they did not use) has been disconnected!!
ODD!!

The whole thing is rather odd. :sad2:

They may have called from a random line somewhere else and their # has been disconnected for sometime and when HSN asked for a number they gave out yours...maybe thinking yours was not real to begin with...BTW..is YOUR number anywhere close to the number THEY had???

Thanks - I will call the phone company today - this just boggles my mind. My number is no where near the same as the one they have listed in the phone book. I had thought maybe they just used my number and maybe for some reason my address popped up when they used my number at HSN but the CM insists that this person gave them my address to send the item too - I just don't know what to think about it. Maybe HSN is trying to cover their butts by saying they did not give out my address however my address is linked with that phone number so if the person didn't really have my address before they do now because they were mailed a copy of the bill. I'm also a little scared that someone might show up at my house asking where their item is. I have already boxed it up to return to HSN.

Could this be a gift? Was there a gift message inside?

That was my first thought too - however there is no message at all and when I called HSN to check on it I was surprised to learn that this person used my phone number as theirs and they opened their acct that day to order the waffle maker - I wish I could get it figured out - :confused3 DH and I have no idea who this person is at all so I'm not sure why they would send me a waffle maker. LOL

How weird-the company I contract takes orders for them. I don't work that line but do work the line of the competing network. Phone numbers do not auto populate. I wonder if they do with Home Shopping Network and they failed to verify.

Out of mere curiousity, if you don't mind--I'm going to post your post on a message board I frequent and see if any of those agents have the scoop on how this would be possible.

Oh Please feel free to post this!! I would appreciate any imput because I am really confused on how this person was allowed to use my phone number to open a new acct when the phone number was already used on mine. I would just accept that this was a gift - lol but I have no idea who this is and why they used my phone number.

Thanks Lisa Loves Pooh!

Well just in case you do decide to keep the waffle iron. Bisquik has the best waffle recipe! Occasionally I add a dash of cinnamon to the mix for cinnamon waffles and the kids gobble them down faster than I can make 'em!

:rotfl2: Thanks for the waffle info. Not sure if we will keep it though. Someone is suppose to call me back from HSN - right now I just reboxed it up and set it aside until I hear back from them.

Hmmmm...

Maybe this is off the wall, but maybe they were planning on grabbing the box from your porch when it was delivered? Maybe they are using a stolen credit card or something and they didn't want their address attached to it?

I actually had thought of that too - I am tempted to call and file a police report just incase this could be a stolen credit card problem. Maybe the person decided to try something small to see if they could get away with it at first before trying something big - Hmmmmm... I just am not too sure what to do - I do not want to waste the police station's time but it might be a good thing to have on report incase anything comes up in the future.

This was the response I got:

Sadly we have no way to verify if the person giving us the phone number is the person actually using the phone number. It sounds like a very bizaar situation to begin with ... lol

If they are opening an account, we just have to take their word for it. I'm glad they sent it to fraud prevention. As far as getting her credit information.. no, once the CC is in the system no one-not even a supervisor can see the complete number.. if the card has expired (the one she used when placing the order a couple years ago) then there is no way the person using her phone number could put anything on her card. (unless they happen to guess the correct updated exp. date).

It just sounds weird that some stranger would use your friends number and address and order something and have it sent to her.. lol. Smart theives would have sent the item to thier address and your friend would have not known for a very long time (or until she tried to place an order herself)....

The other suggestion was that it is possibly a recycled phone number. If like who I take orders for--the history is maintained for a LONNNNNNGGGGG time. So it could be that multiple addresses were associated with the same phone number and that possibly someone just didn't do proper verification. Doesn't sound too comforting--unfortunately I am not familiar with their verification procedures.

So I would check to see if you have any debits or charges--if not, you would be okay except that you are the recipient of an unsolicited waffle maker.

Final food for thought--expired numbers on file--theirs are like ours...once in the system we are not privvy to anything but the last 4 digits and the exp date. For the company I do orders for---if the card is expired the charge will not be authorized and the order cannot be placed. For new cards--if we do not have the sec code---the card cannot be authorized and the card cannot be placed. Not sure how HSN is.

I would definitely do a credit check just to be on the safe side to see that you have no new accounts that you did not open.

Sorry I could not be of more help. Their thoughts are that it is strange and it sounds like an error on HSN's end OR that it was just a dumb thief who failed to send his booty to him or herself. The porch snatch sounds like a possibility.

Thank you so much for all your help!! You won't believe this - I just got a call from HSN and it was an error on their part -a glitch in the system causing some accounts to get merged together, I guess it happened to about 40 accounts. I'm relieved that this is over, it was just too weird. LOL So if you here of a similar story it was a glitch with HSN that happened on 4/29.

Thanks again for your help!

Great! Now that it is solved, what time should we all be over for waffles.... :teeth:

That's funny!

So you get a free waffle maker for you troubles? That's cool!

Glad to hear that the mistake was HSN's. Darn! A waffle maker...couldn't it have been some diamond ring?? LOL!
