Weird Dress Code Question

I think it is incredibly immature to refuse to go somewhere because you would have to take your hat off. I wonder if OP's DF refuses to attend sporting events where they play the national anthem.

That reminds me of a local story. At basketball games in our local schools, guys were always reminded to remove their hats if they hadn't already done so. Well, one woman from a town not too far away was outraged that her father was asked to do so. She wrote our local paper railing that he was a veteran and how dare they tell him to take off his hat. I always thought a veteran would know better myself but....

Shortly after that, signs were posted on all doors of our high schools stating that hats must be removed before entering. It doesn't specify males only BTW. I don't know if there was a connection or if it could have to do with making sure there are no gang signs:confused3 . But I always think of that letter when I see the signs.

i don't see what the big deal is with men wearing their baseball caps inside a restaurant - doesn't bother me, not my business, why are others so concerned?

I agree. DH wears a baseball cap the entire time we are at WDW. Now, granted, we don't eat anywhere fancy- neither one of us want to deal with a dress code while on vacation.

He has worn a cap at 'Ohana, Boma, lunch at Cindy's, Garden Grill, Sci Fi, Mama Melrose, Biergarten, House of Blues, Planet Hollywood, and not felt out of place or like he was being disrespectful.

That said, he wouldn't refuse to keep his hat on if he were asked. It's just that after wearing a cap all day in the heat, you end up with some pretty unsightly hat hair, LOL.

Does anyone think it's sexist that hats are allowed for women, but not for men? My DF "needs" to wear a hat, and will not go to local restaurants that don't allow him to wear one.

Yes, I agree!!! And I think its also sexist that men don't have to wear tops in the pool. I say the days May 9-19th, we organize a rally and all women go topless!!!!! Anyone in??? :woohoo: :cool1: :rotfl2: :cool2:

The OP didn't specify baseball hat in her first post -- merely a "hat".

I know OP didn't state that, I was just asking as many others have made mention of a baseball cap. But I would be willing to bet the hat in question is a baseball cap unless of course he has one of the hats my dh bought at
AK during a rainstorm. I was not paying attention and he made an unfortunate choice. :lmao: I'm usually on fashion duty, but the one time I let my guard down....

I'm from the south and good ole boys are likely to leave their hats on. When Bama played at the Superdome the first time, Bear left his hat on. When asked how a southerner could wear his hat inside, he said he NEVER wore his hat in somebody's momma's house, but any other time was fine. BTW, I always take my hat off at PTC.

One of the most touching moments of my life happened when my grandfather died in 1996, and we had to drive the processional on some small Texas country roads. People not only pulled over to let us pass (now people actually cut you off :confused3 ), but a few older men actually got our of their cars, removed their hats and placed them over their hearts as the hearse passed. Sexist or not, not all tradition is bad...now I have to go off and blow my nose (I told you it was touching! ;) )

I will add that though I am something of a paradox, being a liberal tree-hugging Texan, it still really HOCKS me off when they play the national anthem and people don't remove their hats. Heck, even if I were in another country I would do it out of respect for the people whose country I am visiting. It's just rude.

It must have double posted.

That's the way my DF is, he refuses to take it off, or let anyone other then me, see him without his hat on. There are local restaurants he refuses to go to, since they won't allow him to wear his hat.

:confused3
What does he do for a living?
Will he get married to you with the hat on?

I agree, too. Unless it's a fancy pants restaurant I don't see it as a huge issue. Maybe it's a generation issue. I'm 27 and it doesn't bother me either way, especially in Disney where everything is so casual. I wore my Minnie ears at Le Cellier and the only time I took them off was either for a ride or the Muppets 3D show so people could see.

I guess I don't see it as rude. :confused3 I think it's just a comfort thing for a lot of people. Unless it's a dressy restaurant that requires a jacket and tie, I don't see why anyone would be offended. I don't look at other patrons while I'm eating.

Again, maybe it's just an "old fashioned" thing which I totally respect and admire. Just for me, it doesn't bother me. :goodvibes

IME, its less generational (or even regional) than it is a maturity thing. When I was younger I had quite a few friends who didn't see the necessity of this sort of thing, and all but the most arrested adolescents (and I still know a few) came around eventually.

At some point, people seem to change from "I don't care (and I'm comfortable this way) so you shouldn't care either" to "you know, it isn't that big a deal for me to remove my hat, and there is the chance that I'm offending someone's grandmother."

On the plus side, we no longer NEED gloves. Personally, I think guys had it easy with regards to fashionable life. The burden wasn't that guys COULDN'T wear a hat inside, it was that women NEEDED to have proper headwear and gloves. Can you imagine the burden of having to have a collection of hats that matched your closet.

I just want to add, since it's been brought up in a few posts, that the hat in question is not a baseball hat.

Now, I'm really curious! What is it?
I don't know what it's called, it's just this hat that he always wears. Well, he wears different hats, but they're all the same style.

We don't need a picture of him. How about a picture of the type of hat? Or maybe you could describe it?

I think some of us are just curious, is all. "Not a baseball hat" could be many things.

Can you google for a pic of the hat style?

It's not a cowboy hat is it? lol ;)

I really don't care what other people do, unless they are in my family. In my family you take your hat off at the table, even if you have hat hair, male or female.

I am curious to know what kind of hat it is.
