My wife had a Bariatric sleeve surgery done and we are heading to Universal for our first trip in 10/23. For those that don't know, it means she can't eat a lot in a sitting but also a very high protein diet and low carbs. Very much like a keto diet.

Any thoughts on good places to eat? Need to avoid carbs, plus I am picky, a more meat and potatoes type guy. We are staying at RPR so will probably do the Luau there but would like other thoughts.

We've done keto in the past. The quick service restaurants in the parks are very tough. There are plenty of protein options but most don't have a vegetable option for sides. It's all just different types of potatoes. Monster's Cafe before it closed was the one place where you could get a roasted chicken platter with steamed broccoli instead of potatoes or rice.

I'd make reservations at the table service restaurants either in the parks, city walk or the resorts. She'll have a lot better choices. I'd recommend Big Fire in City Walk.

My sister was a year out from gastric bypass surgery when we went to Universal. I had her study menus to see what she could eat, where, etc.

She also carried some high protein snacks like hippeas or a bag of nuts with her in case she needed a snack.

When I travel I've brought high-protein snacks as well. I just did 10 days in Europe and the best thing I brought was Gatorade protein water flavoring. I was drinking a lot of water because it was so hot and humid so I'd use one or two of those pouches in my bottles during the day to get a little boost of protein. It's 10 grams of protein in a pouch that you use on a half-liter bottle of water.

Headed to Universal in two weeks - also need high protein, clean meals. Did you find anywhere that worked well? Would appreciate any recommendations - staying at Cabana Bay this time. Thanks!

I would plan on doing a grocery delivery service and bring things into the parks that she can tolerate. You can always order a sandwich and not eat the bun at any QS restaurant. They allow you to bring in your own food and drink (not alcohol) which should help her augment her meals. You can use cold water bottles or baggies filled with ice to keep things cold. Easy things to bring into the park are:
  • string cheese
  • deli meats and cheese rollups (in a zip lock baggie)
  • individual packs of peanut butter cups (dip carrots, peppers, celery)
  • nuts
  • plain yogurt
  • beef/turkey jerky
  • pre-cooked grilled chicken
